How Does Solar Panel Work?
Have you ever wondered how solar panel works? Indeed, it can really be amazing just to think how a gadget that you installed on top of your roof can work to produce electrical power in order to run the home appliances and equipment that you have in your home or office. While you might not give any serious thought about the mechanics that goes with the operation of solar home panels, it is certainly worth knowing it especially if you realize that its use can be very helpful in the preservation of the cleanliness of our environment.
How does solar panel work, really?
For those who want to know how solar panel works, actually these gadgets such as solar electric panels produce sun power, which is also known as photovoltaic power or PV. Basically, PV cells are made out of silicon materials. Such materials in turn are made of sand that is manufactured into big computer chips. These chips are made to work as semiconductors.
The rays of the sun are absorbed by the photovoltaic panels, and into a PN junction wherein which the sun energy is transformed into electric power. This PN junction is actually where negative and positive forces work to create the electric field.
Once the much needed power is created by the solar electric panels, the power is transported into electrical wiring around the house. Actually, the electricity is originally a DC type, but since normally homes in the United States run on AC, all of the DC power will be transported to an inverter in order for it to be converted into AC. Thus such converted power can now provide energy to all the homes, offices and other establishments that use the PV systems.
The surplus power that solar electric panels capture is stored in big battery systems meant to collect such power. They are usually found in protected exterior areas of the homes. Also these batteries can be found in basements or any other hidden storage in the house. For those residential and business owners who have great need for electricity, there are batteries that are capable of storing power that can be used continuously for one long week, even longer.
So for those who might ask ?how does solar panel work? It can be quite tricky to know how it really works, especially for the technologically challenged individual. But as long as one is able to purchase his solar electric panels, it can be quite easy to install them on the roof, what with the instruction that accompanies the unit. But if you decide that you simply want to have an easy time, it is advisable to simply let a professional do the installing of your unit.

Kitchen wall unit
This was a recent commision. I was asked to bild a wall unit to match the other units in the kitchen. The main carcass is made from MRMDF and the face frame and door frames are made from Poplar. I routed the ends to look like beaded T&G to match the unit below and the whole unit was painted with AC lacquer. it is held to the wall with a French cleat. should also mention that the cornice is made from Pine which is stained and varnished.

City Utilities End Coal Fired Electricity Contracts in California
In what is hopefully the start of a new trend, several Southern California cities have decided not to renew long-term contracts for coal-fired electricity, choosing instead to turn to cleaner sources of electricity.
City officials told Utah-based Intermountain Power Agency they wouldn't be renewing their contracts for coal-fired power, which expire in 2027, and would instead be looking for alternative energy sources.
"It's a huge change," said Mayor Todd Campbell of Burbank, one of the cities that decided not to renew its contract.
The cities are Pasadena, Glendale, Riverside and Anaheim. They join the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, which has already choosen not to renew the contract with Intermountain. Currently coal fired electricity makes up a significant percentage of their power, for example Pasadena Water & Power says that the Intermountain plant is 65 percent of our energy.
Intermountain's general manager Reed Searle said the company had worked for three years on the renewals and was now looking at ways to modernize its plants to bring them into compliance with California's greenhouse gas legislation that takes effect on the first of January.
The cities' decision came after increased pressure from politicians and environmentalists.
Senator Dianne Feinstein wrote a letter to an umbrella group for the cities last week saying she was "shocked and dismayed" by an initial decision last month by Burbank to renew the contract.
Phyllis Currie, general manager of Pasadena Water & Power said the utilities wanted to explain how important Intermountain was to California cities. "It's a serious issue when you tell us to walk away from that," she said.
The move could put Southern California in the forefront nationally of the commercial use of alternative energy in coming years.
Intermountain has extended its renewal offer for power from the plants until 2023 from the previous deadline of May 2007 in the hope state regulators will let utility officials renew the contracts if greenhouse gases are reduced. Electricity utilities are starting to feel the pressure for "clean" coal.

Update on Shell's Gannet Alpha platform oil leak
Mr Hugh Shaw, who is appointed by the UK Government to oversee the operation, said:
“At 08.45 this morning Shell informed me that all the necessary mitigation measures were in place to allow them to attempt to close the relief valves which were allowing oil to escape into the sea. This is an operation where safety is of paramount importance.
“Shell informed me at 10.58 this morning that both valves have been closed by divers, though I must be clear that this is not the end of this particular phase of the operation as there will now be a period of extensive monitoring to determine whether the operation has been successful and whether the leak has been stemmed. This will be done through subsea surveillance as well as by aerial surveillance by Government aircraft.
“Depending on the outcome of this part of the operation, the next phase will be to stabilise the damaged pipeline and safely remove the remaining hydrocarbons. I have asked Shell to provide me with their outline proposals for tackling this in a timely manner.
“Along with my team of experts, I am continuing to work closely with Shell to monitor and approve the company’s response and ensure that UK Government Ministers are kept fully abreast of the situation. I am also regularly meeting with the Scottish Government to inform them of the progress of the operation.
“DECC and HSE will be conducting a thorough investigation and a full report will, if appropriate, be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
NOTES TO EDITORS
Hugh Shaw is the UK Government Secretary of State’s Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention (SOSREP) and his role is to represent the Secretaries of State for the Department of Energy and Climate Change (in relation to offshore installations) and Department for Transport (in relation to ships) by removing or reducing the risk to safety, property and the UK environment arising from accidents involving ships, fixed or floating platforms or sub-sea infrastructure.

Boat Solar Panels - Alternative Way of Powering up Boats
However, some boats are now utilizing boat solar panels to run some of their vessel?s small appliances such as fans, ovens, cookers and lights. For those who might be interested, there are many boat specialty shops that sell solar kits to create even just partial power from solar energy. Such kits have all that you need to use and enjoy solar power for your boats including the photovoltaic panels themselves, the wires and other important equipment.
It is a good thing that some boat owners have seen the potential of solar power, that?s why they use boat solar panels to power as much as they can on the boat, rather than utilizing diesel. It is a known fact that the utilization of solar energy is a boon to the environment as no pollutions is ever caused with the use of photovoltaic panel devices.
Another advantage of boat solar panels is that it is a quiet way of running the boat. On the other hand, diesel run marine vessels tend to produce irritating noise. Not only do they produce pollutions in the form of emissions, but they also create what is called noise pollution.

Versatile, Affordable Sharpening System
I’m new to turning, and it didn’t take long to figure out I needed a way to sharpen tools.
I picked up a slow-speed (1725 rpm) grinder when Woodcraft had them on sale a few weeks ago.
I’ve been watching YouTube videos posted by Eddie Castelin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdchP8ZYUCc), and decided to try a sharpening system he builds … the Blawkhawk Sharpening System. It sells for a fraction of the price of other systems, and delivers excellent results.
With this rig, you can sharpen Bowl, Fingernail, Roughing and Deep Fluted bowl gouges (Ellsworth type). The rig fits under the grinder, and is supplied with a jig that holds the tool. There actually are two variants … one is the full rig with tubular steel bars, the other (‘International’) is the hardware you need using your own shop-made bars. I bought both so I could have different setups for each side of the grinder … I used 3/4” red oak stock I had in the scrap bin for the bar on the left side of my grinder.
The jig sits in a ‘basket’ on the bar … the baskets are 3/8” couplers on threaded rods, which makes it easy to adjust to suit whatever angle grind you want. Castelin provides a template you can use to make an adjustable setup gauge so can quickly place the pocket of your rig in the same place each time.
I have about $210 invested in this setup including the grinder and Blawkhawk components.
I am a pretty happy camper. I have used both the Wolverine and Sharp Fast systems, and while they are a bit more refined and have some options the Blawkhawk does not (e.g. flat tool rest, skew sharpening jig, etc.), the Blawkhawk system is easy to setup and use, and costs less than others. The Blackhawk comes with easy to follow directions, and if you have questions or need help, Eddie Castelin answers emails promptly. If you call the number he has posted on his website, he answers the phone.
A feature worth noting is the ‘Accu-Set’ devices. They slide over the bar and tighten with a thumb screw so you can quickly set the rig/jig without having to measure or fiddle with the setup … it helps avoid over-grinding and wasting turning tool material every time you sharpen. Each version of the Blawkhawk includes two Accu-Set devices. They are also available separately for other sharpening systems at $12 a pair.
