Bench Building in Berea with Big Wood
The biggest challenge in building a workbench isn?t the design. It isn?t the joinery. And it isn?t even the physical labor.
It?s finding the right wood.
This May I?m teaching a class in building an 18th-century workbench at Kelly Mehler?s School of Woodworking, in Berea, Ky. The bench design uses massive timbers, similar to what Megan Fitzpatrick and I built for her bench at home. The top is only four pieces of wood, and the cool joinery ? the sliding dovetail and tenon a la Roubo ? is cut before assembly.
To get the wood we needed, my first instinct was to ask a log home supplier. Megan scored her wood from Craigslist, which was leftover scraps from a log home. I lined up a supplier this summer, but they kind of flaked on us, perhaps because this is such a small order. You read that right ? wood for about 10 benches (or so) is a small order compared to a house.
We tried two other suppliers and came up empty-handed. I was just about to start redesigning the bench to use 16/4 poplar, when Kelly had a bright idea.
?When I got off of the log home route it dawned on me to check with my local saw mill,? Kelly wrote in an e-mail. ?It was Feldman Lumber that I used for my timbers in the shop. Duh!?
Feldman had exactly what we wanted: 6" x 6" x 8' yellow pine timbers that are dry enough for bench building. Kelly just received the shipment and sent me these photos.
Now that we have the lumber in hand (thanks Kelly), the fun begins. We need to cut these to rough length for the legs and stretchers so they will dry out quickly between now and May.
And so we get to use a tool that is almost as exciting as using a propane torch: the chainsaw.

This alternative source of power, the solar panels homes will surely lead to a much greener and cleaner environment. If home owners would simply switch power usage from electricity to solar power, then much of the environmental and ecological problems of our world will surely be eliminated.

Top Ten UK Alternative Energy Projects
Solar Powered CIS Tower in Manchester
The UK?s top ten alternative energy projects have been named by the UK government?s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). They include offshore turbines in Kent, the solar-powered CIS tower in Manchester and a wave buoy in Cornwall.
A target of supplying 10% of the UK's electricity from renewable energy by 2010 has been set by the British government.
The list includes three wind farms, three solar-power projects, and two examples of microgeneration, or projects with lower outputs.
According to the government, the 30-turbine Kentish Flats wind farm has been described as "the Ferrari of the turbine world".
Black Law A in South Lanarkshire was one of the largest wind farms approved in the UK, and the Cefn Croes project near Aberystwyth the most powerful when it opened in June.
The CIS tower in Manchester - the city's tallest building - was on course to be the biggest user of solar panels in the UK.
The biomass plant in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, was singled out for producing a "revolutionary new wood pellet bio fuel", created by burning sawdust and woodchips.
The wave buoy project off the north Cornwall coast was highlighted as a project that would "speed up the installation of one of the world's first wave farms". The site is being investigated as a possible wave hub location - an offshore electrical socket that would be connected to the national grid.

Why is Uncle Sam going solar? It can save BIG money.
Washington D.C. ? U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced a $344 million loan guarantee that will support the SolarStrong Project, which is expected to be a record expansion of residential rooftop solar power in the United States. Under the SolarStrong Project, SolarCity Corporation will install, own and operate up to 160,000 rooftop solar installations on as many as 124 U.S. military bases in up to 33 states. SolarCity expects the project to fund approximately 750 construction jobs over five years and 28 full time operating jobs. Many of the jobs are expected to be filled by U.S. veterans and military family members, who will be recruited, trained and employed to install, operate and maintain the photovoltaic (PV) systems.
?This is the largest domestic residential rooftop solar project in history,? said Secretary Chu. ?This groundbreaking project is expected to create hundreds of jobs for Americans and provide clean, renewable power to our military families. It can also be a model for other large-scale rooftop solar projects that help America regain its lead in the solar industry.?
The project, which could create up to 371 megawatts of new solar capacity, includes the installation of residential rooftop PV systems on existing privatized military family residences and other privatized buildings, such as community centers, administrative offices, maintenance buildings and storage warehouses. The project will provide low-cost, renewable electricity to privatized military housing and is expected to avoid over 250,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. The SolarStrong Project will have the added benefit of helping the Department of Defense (DOD), the single-largest energy consumer in the U.S., secure its energy needs from domestic renewable sources that are independent from the utility grid, at no additional cost to taxpayers. DOD has a stated goal that 25 percent of all energy consumed by 2025 shall be supplied from renewable sources.
The project will be rolled out over five years, starting with a four megawatt installation at Hickam Air Force base in Hawaii, with construction currently underway. SolarStrong is expected to sell electricity produced from the projects through long-term electricity sales agreements or lease solar systems through long-term lease contracts.
USRG Renewable Finance, an affiliate of US Renewables Group, is acting as lead lender in partnership with Bank of America Merrill Lynch. USRG Renewable Finance submitted the application under the Financial Institution Partnership Program (FIPP). In a FIPP financing, the Department of Energy guarantees up to 80 percent of a loan provided to a renewable energy project by qualified financial institutions.
The Department of Energy's Loan Programs Office administers three separate programs: the Title XVII Section 1703 and Section 1705 loan guarantee programs, and the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing (ATVM) loan program. The loan guarantee programs support the deployment of commercial technologies along with innovative technologies that avoid, reduce, or sequester greenhouse gas emissions, while ATVM supports the development of advanced vehicle technologies. To date, the Department has issued loans, loan guarantees or offered conditional commitments for loan guarantees totaling nearly $40 billion to support more than 40 clean energy projects across the United States, including several of the world?s largest solar generation facilities, three geothermal projects, the world?s largest wind farm, and the nation?s first new nuclear power plant in three decades.

Amazing Saw For The Price........ Minus the Insert Plate
This is an amazing saw for the price in my opinion. The reviews written by ‘LafayetteJack’ & ‘bobdobbs’ are dead on with my assessment of this saw. I’m just adding my 2 cents to the review of the product…...... I have no financial interest in Porter Cable or Lowes, and my woodworking experience is beginner – intermediate and is simply my hobby.
I purchased this saw for many of the same reasons stated by the other reviewers:
1) This is the most saw (features & quality) you can get at this price.
2) I do not have a large work space, so this folds up nice and will store out of the way.
3) It will accept a DADO
4) Good Warranty in my opinion
As I said, ‘LafayetteJack’ & ‘bobdobbs’ reviews are dead on, and the specs they list are accurate…...not much I can add in that regard. Make sure you check all of the alignments after it is assembled. Mine was perfect right out of the box (and I am very particular). My only change from the setup as it comes out of the box was I put a Freud Fusion Blade on it for detail work and cutting hardwoods. The Blade that comes with it is not bad however and I use it for everything else.
The performance of the saw has been great. I have used this saw to create dozens of end-grain cutting boards. Every time I have not had any problem with straightness of cut, no burn marks, no gaps in the glue-up everything was great. I have built bird houses, a patio storage box (ripped down decking boards), cordless drill charging station, candle centerpieces for my wife…..all joints were tight, angles were dead on.
I have had no problems with the saw bogging down, or any problems with the fence.
To address some of the discussions from the other reviews…...
1) This saw is on the Porter Cable webpage here. You can find all of the specs, download the instruction manual and order parts.
2) There is a DADO insert plate you can buy as it states in the instructions, part number 2UUW, made specifically for this saw. I ordered it and it works great no problems. I use a cheap $40 6in dado set from Rockler, and my cuts have been very flat and clean.
3) My miter gauge is tight, and I have used a Rockler feather board and it works well in the miter slots also.
4) There is no zero clearance insert for this saw that I can find. Hopefully someone will make one or figure out a way to build one from wood.
As for the review from ‘AKMECHANIC,’ I have had none of the problems he has reported. My table is very flat (for a $300 saw with an aluminum top). Using my machinist squares and blocks, I have no gaps from the blade to the left/right or front to back across the table. My fence handle is not the same design as his (mine is more of the traditional broom handle, still plastic). I have no problems with it getting in the way. Manufacture date on mine is July 2010, I purchased it in November 2010. The stand is adequate too, I have moved the table extension to the full 24 inch extended position and cut plywood with no problems, no tipping or movement (make sure you use the leveling knob on the stand feet).
The only major problem with this saw is the insert plate as others have mentioned. This is the only feature that keeps it out of the league of the Rigid Worksite Saw (I have used both). To me, it is not worth the extra money for the standard plate size and the extra $200. I have made a cheap table saw sled with zero clearance that gives me great results on cross-cuts. If I was going to shell out $500 bucks, I would go ahead and shell out a little more and get a contractor saw (if i had the room in my garage :-)
Overall this is a great saw. Stop in at Lowes and take a look at the insert plate before you buy to make sure you can live with it’s limitations.

Hybrid Bench
Well it’s been almost a year since I started working on this, and I suppose that lot’s of you are tired of looking at it in my blog…...here. But I finally got the chisel mallet done today – which was a cutoff from the front vice chop – so it’s time to call it a project…..... Like everything else in the shop, it will probably evolve….....
First off – I appreciate all the advice and inspiration I got from fellow LJ’s to build this – Could not have done this without you!
The quick specs:
- Hard Maple Bowling Lane re-purposed with Jatoba accents.
- Extruded Aluminum base using Parker (IPS) shapes – similar to 80/20 material.
- Industrial strength casters with adjustable rubber feet.
- Veritas Twin Screw vice lined in leather
- Grizzly front vice with leather on the chop.
- Two removable tool tills – one on the front and one on the end.
- Matching dogs and mallet…......plus the pencil holder :) All from the bench scraps.
- Hard Maple flooring for the floating shelf at the bottom.

For a home owner who wishes to purchase his own sun powered panel devices, he must realize that solar panels on sale can have a very high price. And this is why before one would even think about buying his own gadget, he must consider some thing.

Austin Energy Excels as #1 Green Energy Electricity Utility in America
UPDATE: This is a list of the top ten green energy programs in the United States with the latest December 2005 figures and links to these electric utilities. One of the biggest differences we can make is to switch to "green energy" - energy generated from 100% renewable sources. Florida Power & Light is a new entry into the top ten at number four. The company recently announced the construction of the largest solar array in Florida on the site of a closed landfill in Sarasota. The 1,200 photovoltaic solar panels are each about 31 inches wide and 63 inches long. The facility is to be more than 28,000 square feet, or about half the size of a football field. "We sought a location that had a ground site large enough for 250 kilowatts of photovoltaic panels," said Jeff Bartel, FP&L VP of external affairs.

One of the single biggest ways we as individuals can encourage the use of alternative energy and help aid the transition to a post fossil fuel age is to buy electricity partly, or preferably completely, generated using alternative energy.
Switching your electricity utility provider may be as simple as requesting a form or filling one in online. That's exactly how I switched to 100% renewable energy (generated mainly from wind power with some solar power and small scale hydro thrown into the mix). Renewable energy options are available throughout the U.K. and in many other countries.
To find out if you can switch to renewable energy in your area look on your search engine of choice for "green energy", "green power" or "green electricity". You may also need to add your location to the search. If your local utility doesn't provide a renewable energy option yet, email or call them and ask why.
