How to make money selling your work as a Artisan

How to make money selling your work as a Artisan

Want to review a book that I just purchased a few days ago. It?s called ?Artisans & Money?, written by Joe Rollins.
Some of you may remember me posting a review of his lathe cutting tools and as of today I have had 1146 views with 7 comments. Not sure if any of you ordered any of these tools but if you are starting out in wood turning or even if you have been turning for years I still feel this is one of the best investments you can make. Why? Great product at a lower price than other seem to offer. Still want you to visit his web site and check it out for your self. www.thingswestern.com

Back to the book. I just happen to come across the book while visiting Joe & Janet web site. The word money got my eye. Most everyone I know likes money. I know I do and most everyone that is an Artisan needs money in order to continue being an Artisan. IF you don?t happen to know what Artisan means don?t feel bad. I didn?t either until I read this book.

The cost of the book is 18 dollars with a 7 dollar shipping cost. That comes to 25 dollars. I got my 25 dollars worth by things I was able to learn from Joe, within a couple of chapters I went and made changes to my web site. I plan on making several other changes based on reading this book. I plan on start making money based on reading this book.

Is it for you? That I can?t say for sure but if you are an Artisan and just being on this site tells me you are. then this book is written for you.
Do you want to make money or more money? Then this book is for you.
Do you own a web site to sell your products? Then this book is for you.
Do you sell on Ebay or Etsy or any site? Then this book is for you. I could go on and on but no reason to do that. Now it?s up to you to check this book out. Wish I had gotten one a long time ago.
Thanks for viewing and if you purchase this book would like to hear from you and let me know if it has helped you.

Renewable Energy Storage, pumped hydro electric systems

One of the issues with renewable energy, as opposed to fossil fuel based energy, is energy storage. The sun doesn’t always shine and the wind doesn’t alway blow. On any given day, solar and wind output can vary by large percentages. With large grid interconnected generating systems, this can lead to large swings in output [...]

Statistical press release: UK energy statistics

Statistical press release: UK energy statistics

Energy Trends and Quarterly Energy Prices publications are published today 27 September 2012 by the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Energy Trends covers statistics on energy production and consumption, in total and by fuel, and provides an analysis of the year on year changes, and now includes a section on renewables.

Quarterly Energy Prices covers prices to domestic and industrial consumers, prices of oil products and comparisons of international fuel prices.

The main points for the second quarter of 2012 are:

  • Indigenous production of fuels in the UK fell by 10.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2012 compared with a year earlier. Oil production fell by 12.2 per cent and natural gas production fell by 13.9; these falls were due to maintenance activity and slowdowns on a number of fields.
  • Total primary energy consumption for energy uses rose by 6.3 per cent. However, when adjusted to take account of weather differences between the second quarter of 2011 and the second quarter of 2012, primary energy consumption rose by 0.8 per cent.
  • Final energy consumption rose by 5.1 per cent, with domestic consumption up 32.8 per cent; domestic consumption in the second quarter of 2011 was particularly low due to warmer weather last year.
  • Total deliveries of the key transport fuels were down 6.3 per cent when compared to the same period last year. Motor spirit deliveries fell by 10.6 per cent, with deliveries in April 2012 particularly low following a substantial increase in March 2012 in anticipation of a potential tanker drivers’ strike.
  • Of electricity generated in the second quarter of 2012, gas accounted for 29.8 per cent (its lowest second quarter share in the last fourteen years) due to high gas prices, whilst coal accounted for 36.1 per cent (its highest second quarter share in the last fourteen years).
  • Renewables’ share of electricity generation increased to 9.6 per cent from the 9.0 per cent share in the second quarter of 2011. Hydro generation decreased by 31.3 per cent on the second quarter of 2011 as a result of low rainfall. Over the same period, offshore wind generation increased by 46.7 per cent, whilst onshore wind generation fell by 11.4 per cent. Overall renewable generation was up 6.5 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2011.
  • Domestic electricity prices, including VAT, were 5.5 per cent higher in real terms than in the same period last year, whilst domestic gas prices were 13.0 per cent higher.

For the period July to December 2011, prices for industrial electricity consumers, including taxes, were above the EU15 median for medium, large and extra-large consumers, but below the median for small consumers. Prices for industrial gas consumers were the lowest in the EU15 for all consumers. Due to a delay in publication of the data by Eurostat, we do not have international comparisons for first 6 months of 2012. DECC plan to publish data for January to June 2012 on the DECC web site at the end of October, subject to Eurostat’s publication schedule.

The September 2012 edition of Energy Trends also includes articles on:

  • Renewable electricity in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the regions of England in 2011
  • Combined Heat and Power in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the regions of England in 2011
  • Running hours during winter 2011/12 for plants opted-out of the Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD)
  • Estimates of heat use in the United Kingdom in 2011
  • Home insulation levels in Great Britain - methodological changes
  • Feed-in Tariff statistics
  • National Grid operational metering data and renewables
  • New Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCs) table
  • Number of properties benefitting through receipt of insulation measures and energy efficiency products from Energy Supplier obligations

To view the complete set of tables and information contained in the release, please see:

Communities must see benefit from hosting wind farms - Davey

Communities must see benefit from hosting wind farms - Davey

Communities that host onshore wind farms could benefit from reduced electricity bills and investment in local infrastructure, Energy Secretary Edward Davey said today.

The comments came alongside the launch of a call for evidence aimed at ensuring that communities secure financial, social and environmental benefit from hosting onshore wind farms.

The community benefits consultation will seek new information on:

  • Barriers to community engagement and how to address these;
  • How wind farms could deliver wider environmental and social benefits to communities e.g. by providing grants for playgrounds;
  • Best practice in local consultation by developers;
  • Ways to maximise participation by local businesses in the economic supply chain for wind projects; and
  • Innovative ways to reward host communities, such as offsetting electricity bills.

The Government will also seek the latest information on the cost of onshore wind to confirm whether subsidies from April 2014 have been set at the correct level.

Energy Secretary Edward Davey said:

“Onshore wind has an important role to play in a diverse energy mix that is secure, low carbon and affordable. We know that two-thirds of people support the growth of onshore wind. But far too often, host communities have seen the wind farms but not the windfall.

“We are sensitive to the controversy around onshore wind and we want to ensure that people benefit from having wind farms sited near to them.

“This new call for evidence will look at ways to reward host communities and ensure that wider investment, employment and social benefits are felt locally.

“We must also ensure that our policies are based on the best available evidence, so that consumers are not over-subsidising any one technology. That’s why we are seeking new evidence on the cost of onshore wind.”

Energy Minister John Hayes said:

"This call for evidence is a recognition that both parties in the Coalition are alive to the need for fresh thinking about community engagement on onshore wind.

"Appropriately sited onshore wind has a role to play, but if we're to make this work in a way that garners popular support, we've got to see a big improvement in how developers engage with local communities, new ways of ensuring a sense of local ownership and more obvious local economic benefits.

"The Government is open minded about how we go about this, and that's what this call for evidence is about. It's an opportunity for anyone with a view about onshore wind - proponents and opponents alike - to come forward with workable ideas and solutions."

Notes for editors

  1. The documents can be found on the DECC website.
  2. The Government’s Renewables Obligation Banding Review was published in July 2012 with a commitment to undertake a call for evidence on community benefits and the cost of onshore wind.
  3. In 2011, onshore wind provided 3% of UK electricity supply. There are currently around 5GW of onshore wind (3,350 turbines) installed in the UK. Around 6GW of onshore wind are awaiting construction (2,682 turbines), with around a further 7GW in the planning system (3,063 turbines). Many of these in planning are in Scotland. Not all of these projects will be built – in England around half of all onshore wind projects do not receive planning approval. To meet the trajectory set out in the Renewable Energy Roadmap, we expect to need up to 13GW of onshore wind by 2020.
  4. Currently, the wind industry pays a minimum of £1,000/MW to communities, but in reality many provide larger benefits packages.
  5. Case studies – Onshore wind and community benefit

An Suidhe wind farm in Argyll

An Suidhe Wind Farm is located five miles west of Inveraray in Argyll. Construction started in January 2009 and it became operational in January 2011. An Suidhe is owned by RWE npower renewables which took control of developing the wind farm in 2005.

The model for the community benefit fund was chosen after a consultation process that included written feedback from five local organisations. This concluded that the area that the fund would primarily benefit would be communities within a 10km radius of the site. The fund would provide £28,500 annually (which would rise with inflation) and is administered by the Scottish Community Foundation. So far eight grants have been awarded including grants for the repair and improvement of a church, museum and village hall. The fund will have an economic impact through making these facilities more attractive and accessible to tourists. The fund will also have an impact through grants such as the one to assist the running costs of Cairndow Community Child Care.

Burnfoot Hill wind farm in Glendevon

Revenue generated from Burnfoot Hill Wind Farm has been used to support the Ochils Landscape Partnership (OLP), a £2.26 million portfolio of small projects (currently 22), which provide long-term social, economic and environmental benefits for the area. The objectives of the scheme are to conserve the area’s built, social and natural heritage with opportunities for local people to learn and participate in the work. The wind farm provides more than 50% of the OLP’s funding, with £0.5 million having already been contributed to get a number of projects up and running. This funding has also allowed the OLP to secure matched funding from other sources.

Projects include “Wee Bit Hill and Glen” (a programme to promote, celebrate and enhance access to the Ochil Hills); “By The Banks of the Devon” (a programme to the enhance, promote and conserve the River Devon); and “The Hills of Time” (a programme that promotes the cultural, social and industrial heritage of the area). Wind Prospect and EDF Energy Renewables will also be participating in the first annual Ochils Festival, by providing educational opportunities focusing on renewable energy and climate change.

  1. On Tuesday this week, 18 September, the latest wave of DECC’s public attitude survey was published. Perceptions of a range of renewable energy sources were mostly positive. On-shore wind had good support (66%) but had the highest level of opposition, though this was still only 12% opposing, with 4% strongly opposing. For further information see the pages on the DECC website.

City Utilities End Coal Fired Electricity Contracts in California

In what is hopefully the start of a new trend, several Southern California cities have decided not to renew long-term contracts for coal-fired electricity, choosing instead to turn to cleaner sources of electricity.

City officials told Utah-based Intermountain Power Agency they wouldn't be renewing their contracts for coal-fired power, which expire in 2027, and would instead be looking for alternative energy sources.

"It's a huge change," said Mayor Todd Campbell of Burbank, one of the cities that decided not to renew its contract.

The cities are Pasadena, Glendale, Riverside and Anaheim. They join the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, which has already choosen not to renew the contract with Intermountain. Currently coal fired electricity makes up a significant percentage of their power, for example Pasadena Water & Power says that the Intermountain plant is 65 percent of our energy.

Intermountain's general manager Reed Searle said the company had worked for three years on the renewals and was now looking at ways to modernize its plants to bring them into compliance with California's greenhouse gas legislation that takes effect on the first of January.

The cities' decision came after increased pressure from politicians and environmentalists.

Senator Dianne Feinstein wrote a letter to an umbrella group for the cities last week saying she was "shocked and dismayed" by an initial decision last month by Burbank to renew the contract.

Phyllis Currie, general manager of Pasadena Water & Power said the utilities wanted to explain how important Intermountain was to California cities. "It's a serious issue when you tell us to walk away from that," she said.

The move could put Southern California in the forefront nationally of the commercial use of alternative energy in coming years.

Intermountain has extended its renewal offer for power from the plants until 2023 from the previous deadline of May 2007 in the hope state regulators will let utility officials renew the contracts if greenhouse gases are reduced. Electricity utilities are starting to feel the pressure for "clean" coal.

Letter from John Hayes to the Times newspaper

Letter from John Hayes to the Times newspaper

Sir

Vincent de Rivaz (“The nuclear option is essential for our future, The Times Opinion, 17 Sep) is quite right to say that the Energy Bill is “one of the most important Bills of this Parliament”, because the energy sector at the core of our economy, crucial for growth and jobs. It accounted for 4.4% of GDP in 2011 and represents around half of industrial investment in the UK.

The iconic infrastructural commitment, which characterised FDR’s response to US economic woes in the 1930s was an investment in the energy sector – the Hoover Dam. And so it will be here; working with industry, Government will embark upon the greatest reform of the electricity market since privatisation to facilitate unprecedented new investment – with nuclear power playing a key role alongside other technologies.

New Car Stickers Include Electric Vehicle Ratings

The federal government announced new car window stickers for vehicles starting with the 2013 model year.  The new stickers include electric vehicles, estimated annual fuel costs and the vehicle?s overall environmental impact for driving 15,000 miles per year. There will be different labels for conventional vehicles, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles, with cars running solely on battery power estimated to get 99 miles per gallon.
electric car mileage label
Here is an example of how the new sticker works for the Nissan Leaf all electric vehicle.  The Nissan Leaf sticker shows 99 miles per gallon, $561 in annual fuel cost and $7,450 in fuel savings over five years compared to other vehicles in the same class size.  In other words, this electric vehicle will cost just $46 per month in fuel, saving the typical driver about $125 per month in fuel costs compared to an average gas-powered car in the same class.

In addition, the Leaf has the highest rating, 10 out of 10, for fuel economy, greenhouse gas and smog emissions.

When developing the new sticker, there was some concern that electric car drivers will just be switching one dirty energy source, oil, for another, coal, which produces about 60% of the nation's electricity.  However, coal is at least a domestic source and does not rely on foreign, potentially hostile oil-producing countries.  Regardless, more people are starting to realize that the best way to power an electric vehicle is with clean solar panels installed at home.

The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation are jointly responsible for the window sticker program.  ?These labels will provide consumers with up-front information about a vehicle?s fuel costs and savings so that they can make informed decisions when purchasing a new car,? said Ray LaHood, the transportation secretary.

The new stickers will for the first time include a greenhouse gas rating, comparing a vehicle?s emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases with those of all other vehicles, as well as a smog rating based on emissions of other air pollutants like nitrogen oxide and particulates.

Cars capable of running on electricity will get the highest greenhouse gas and smog ratings. Stickers for plug-in hybrids and electric cars will also include their charging time and estimated range while running in electric-only mode.

The labels will include an estimated annual fuel cost based on 15,000 miles traveled at a fuel price of $3.70 per gallon as well as an estimate of how much more or less the vehicle will cost to operate over five years than an average new vehicle. In addition to the familiar city, highway and combined fuel economy estimates expressed in miles per gallon, the sticker will include an estimate of how much fuel the vehicle will need to travel 100 miles.

The E.P.A. said the new gallons-per-mile metric, combined with the estimated fuel costs, would provide consumers a more accurate measure of efficiency and expense than the traditional miles-per-gallon figure, which rarely reflects real-world driving conditions.

The gasoline price is based on Department of Energy surveys and calculations and will typically be updated annually, the E.P.A said.

The label will also include a QR Code that can be scanned by a smartphone to obtain cost estimates based on a consumer?s driving habits and the price of gasoline and electricity where he or she lives, as well as comparisons with other vehicles. Such calculators will also be accessible online. The National Automobile Dealers Association welcomed the new design.
