Ebonized oak lamp

Ebonized oak lamp

I didn’t particularly need a new lamp, but I wanted to make something with an organic shape, and play with some finishing techniques, and this idea fit the bill.

The lamp is made of five layers of 3/4 inch oak. Some planning was required to make sure I had a suitable conduit for the wire to run through. The legs are asymmetrical, but it’s a bit hard to see… I think it ended up looking a bit Star Trek. But I had fun carving it. There are no flat surfaces anywhere except the bottom of the feet.

I finished it with a sequence of: black tea, a cocktail of vinegar and steel, shellac, and a polyacrylic topcoat. I’m sure I could have skipped at least one of those steps, but I learned a lot along the way.
