Making a Condiment Tote (for beginners) #3: Finishing the inside

Now that the sides, ends and bottom are cut I stain them, on the insides only, before putting the box of the tote together. It’s much easier to stain before glueing because trying to reach your hand inside a box and stain it is very difficult.

With pine, I use flecto Varathane’s Gel Stain. It does not require any undercoating and always give me a streak-proof finish. Not all stains work well on pine but I have had great success with this. I rub it on with a piece of old t-shirt material.

The stain is left on for a few minutes (it can look smeared and uneven as below) and then the excess is rubbed off, moving in the direction of the grain.

I put a coat of stain and three coats of polyurethane on all the sides, ends and bottom pieces.

What I should have done is taped off the inside of the end pieces where they will be glued to the sides so as not to stain nor put polyurethane on them. Instead I had to sand off the stain and clear coat where the glue will go as you can see below.

The pieces are glued and clamped and after drying I remove the clamps and put two finishing nails in each joint.

Because there is a continuous groove made on the tablesaw for the plywood to fit in, the groove runs out the side and can be seen as a small open square of wood. I make a small square dowel that will fit the opening exactly and put it in with a dab of glue.

When the glue dries I cut the dowel with a flush cutting knife.

The boxes are sanded on the outside and measured on the inside for the exact width of the handle that fits inside. The handle was not cut until this point in order to have a perfect fit.

I make a cardboard template (from the back of a cereal box) to get the correct sizes. The width is the width inside the box as stated above, the spot at where the handle begins to angle upwards is the height of the inside of the box. I felt I needed about a 3” wide handle opening and marked that on the template in order to figure out a proper slope on the handle to the top. The total height of the handle piece had to allow someone to hold the tote without their hand hitting a ketchup bottle that is placed inside it.

...to be continued…

Greg Barker's article in the New Statesman

Greg Barker's article in the New Statesman

Gone are the days of governments banging on about the green economy divorced from the challenges facing the rest of business and without any reference to what was happening in the real economy.

The truth is that businesses – especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) – are finding it hard to make ends meet at the moment. These really are tough times. And the last thing that companies need is more Whitehall greenwash rammed down their throats.

We need a new low carbon reality. One which sees green business – and the effort to reduce emissions – as part of the wider success of the economy. One in which efforts to improve resource efficiency and drive down carbon emissions underpin, rather than compromise, the competitiveness of the British economy.

That reality lies at the heart of this coalition's approach to Britain's low carbon transition.

Business is right to demand certainty and direction from government. And that's what this coalition is determined to provide. My mantra is give business plenty of TLC – transparency, longevity and certainty. It's what guides our policy making and is vital to establishing a successful prosperous green economy.

As part of our wider growth effort and work to rebalance the economy, we want a successful green economy in the UK, moving away from our dependence on expensive fossil fuels to a future powered by low carbon energy and green technologies. This shift of course represents challenges but also a massive business opportunity with tens of billions of pounds of investment needed and green job opportunities up for grabs over the next decade.

The green economy isn't just an economy for big companies. Businesses of all shapes and sizes will be at the forefront of this drive. Success will require great innovation and technological progress – one of the key attributes of Britain's SME sector.

And I know for myself that there are already many great British firms that are stealing a march on this global low carbon revolution and are at the forefront of green tech innovation. I want this to continue and it is up to this coalition to create the right conditions to allow them to thrive and prosper.

Firstly, despite the massive deficit we inherited, the coalition is investing billions of pounds of public money into the low carbon transition.

Not just throwing money at the problems but investing smartly, with rigour and in ways that leverage in the maximum private sector investment and create opportunities for our businesses.

We are putting £3bn into the Green Investment Bank as well as £860m to support renewable heat, stimulating investment in green heat technologies by a massive £7.5bn by 2020. Hundreds of millions of pounds of further funding has also been made available to boost a variety of low-carbon technologies including offshore wind.

This represents a huge boost for the low carbon goods and services market in the UK and also represents a huge opportunity for UK exports too. The global market for low carbon goods and services is currently worth £3.2trn and is estimated to grow to over £4trn by 2015.

But the "green economy" isn't just about government spending. Our second priority is to undertake radical reforms that are designed to create new markets and to attract greater amounts of private investment into the green economy. It's about freeing up the private sector to do what it does best: innovate and create wealth. Our proposals for electricity market reform will create a new market which – for the very first time – will create large scale energy efficiency investment to compete with new power generation projects.

It's also about business becoming more energy efficient – a key requirement for any competitive firm in the 21st century. For all businesses, energy efficiency can make a real difference to the bottom line and increase competitiveness.

That's why we're bringing in the Green Deal, to be introduced next autumn for households as well as businesses, to help address the stumbling block of access to capital for green improvements.

Up and down the UK, from shops and offices to pubs and clubs, firms will be able to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings at no upfront cost. The expected energy savings should be higher than the cost of repayment and will help businesses spread the costs over time rather than shelling out upfront.

The Green Deal is not only a great way to tackle the financial barrier to energy efficiency, it also represents a massive new business opportunity with tens of billions of pounds of investment needed, products to be developed and jobs to be supported.

By creating a new market opportunity for private sector finance we will provide another major opportunity for growth and employment with tens of thousands of jobs likely to be created in the home insulation market alone by 2020. We want the Green Deal to be a real success story for British business.

The Prime Minister has committed this coalition to be the greenest government ever. We are driving forward the agenda in tough economic times but we are also absolutely certain that success depends on a business friendly approach to low carbon policy. That is what you'll get from this coalition; big ambition, long term vision but absolutely grounded in the economic realities of today.

Gregory Barker's Written Ministerial Statement on the Feed-in Tariffs consultation

Gregory Barker's Written Ministerial Statement on the Feed-in Tariffs consultation

Today I am publishing a consultation paper on proposed changes to Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) for solar photovoltaics (PV).  The consultation will close on 23 December 2011.

Since the FITs scheme started it has been successful in encouraging people up and down the country to get involved in local, clean green energy generation. Over 100,000 homes now generate their own electricity, and this is just the start of a move towards a far more decentralised local energy economy.  An economy in which homes, businesses and communities are empowered to generate their own energy, and in which low carbon innovation helps sustain green jobs at a critical time for our economy.   A sustainable FITs scheme has an essential role in delivering that vision.

However, the green economy does not exist in a vacuum and it is important, particularly in the current climate, that our approach to public subsidy is responsible and results in the widest possible deployment.  To date, solar PV has been by far the most popular technology with consumers.  We know that the costs of an average PV system have fallen by at least 30% since the FITs scheme started (and we are aware of reports that the global costs of PV modules have fallen by as much as 70% since 2008). This is resulting in returns for investors in solar PV that are simply not sustainable and, without action, could result in the spending envelope for the scheme rapidly being breached.

Today’s consultation document therefore focuses on addressing the budgetary problem and proposes reducing the tariffs for solar PV. Full details of the proposals are set out in the consultation document. The headline is that we are proposing that the generation tariff for PV installations with a total installed capacity of 4kW or less will be reduced to 21p/kWh, which our modelling indicates should deliver around a 4.5% rate of return. We are also proposing reductions to the generation tariffs for PV installations above that level and up to 250kW. These changes are vital if we are to ensure a lasting FITs scheme.

We are proposing that the new generation tariffs should apply from 1 April 2012 to all new solar PV installations which become eligible for FITs on or after an earlier ‘reference date’ which we propose should be 12 December 2011. Installations which become eligible for FITs before the reference date will not be affected and will continue to be eligible for the current generation tariffs.

The consultation also seeks views on two other changes to the FITs scheme for solar PV.  Firstly, the introduction from 1 April 2012 of new multi-installation tariff rates for aggregated solar PV schemes.  These are schemes where a single individual or organisation owns or receives FIT payments from  more than one PV installation, located on different sites.

A final but crucial proposal in this package is to strengthen the link between FITs and energy efficiency by introducing a new energy efficiency requirement for FITs for solar PV. The new requirement would apply to all new solar PV installations which become eligible for FITs on or after 1 April 2012 which are attached or wired to provide electricity to a building.  If the building does not meet the energy efficiency requirement the installation would receive a lower FITs rate of 9p/kWh.

This consultation is the first of two on the comprehensive review of FITs that was announced at the start of the year. We will be publishing a separate consultation around the end of 2011 which will consider other aspects of the scheme including the tariffs for other FIT technologies.  It will also consider proposals to make the FITs scheme more intelligent and responsive to change, improving the system that we inherited from the previous administration to remove the need for stop start reviews and provide greater transparency, longevity and certainty to the industry.

Dewalt Biscuits Align Tabletops Accurately

Dewalt Biscuits Align Tabletops Accurately

These Dewalt Biscuits fit snugly into the slot compared to other brands I have used. In the dozens of tubes of Porter Cable biscuits I have used, they are always a little loose. That is fine for most work, but these Dewalt biscuits are better. Because the fit is so good, it actually aligns the edges for you. This is very helpful when doing glue-ups for tabletops.
I realized how good the fit was when I mistakenly put biscuits in the slots on both sides of the joint. When I realized I had added too many biscuits and went to remove them – I COULDN’T PULL THEM OUT! It took pliers to remove them.
Very pleased with this product. Mine came in a plastic tube, so I don’t think they had absorbed any moisture in storage/transport.

How Does Solar Panel Work?

Have you ever wondered how solar panel works? Indeed, it can really be amazing just to think how a gadget that you installed on top of your roof can work to produce electrical power in order to run the home appliances and equipment that you have in your home or office. While you might not give any serious thought about the mechanics that goes with the operation of solar home panels, it is certainly worth knowing it especially if you realize that its use can be very helpful in the preservation of the cleanliness of our environment.

How does solar panel work, really?

For those who want to know how solar panel works, actually these gadgets such as solar electric panels produce sun power, which is also known as photovoltaic power or PV. Basically, PV cells are made out of silicon materials. Such materials in turn are made of sand that is manufactured into big computer chips. These chips are made to work as semiconductors.

The rays of the sun are absorbed by the photovoltaic panels, and into a PN junction wherein which the sun energy is transformed into electric power. This PN junction is actually where negative and positive forces work to create the electric field.

Once the much needed power is created by the solar electric panels, the power is transported into electrical wiring around the house. Actually, the electricity is originally a DC type, but since normally homes in the United States run on AC, all of the DC power will be transported to an inverter in order for it to be converted into AC. Thus such converted power can now provide energy to all the homes, offices and other establishments that use the PV systems.

The surplus power that solar electric panels capture is stored in big battery systems meant to collect such power. They are usually found in protected exterior areas of the homes. Also these batteries can be found in basements or any other hidden storage in the house. For those residential and business owners who have great need for electricity, there are batteries that are capable of storing power that can be used continuously for one long week, even longer.

So for those who might ask ?how does solar panel work? It can be quite tricky to know how it really works, especially for the technologically challenged individual. But as long as one is able to purchase his solar electric panels, it can be quite easy to install them on the roof, what with the instruction that accompanies the unit. But if you decide that you simply want to have an easy time, it is advisable to simply let a professional do the installing of your unit.

Mixed Signals & Federal Funding for Alternative Energy Research

There have definitely been some mixed signals on alternative energy research recently. At the same time President Bush's State of the Union address called for a 22 percent increase in federal spending to develop alternative energies, dozens of staffers and contractors for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado, were being laid off.

The disconnect was a political embarrassment for the president, so federal officials restored the laboratory's funding, rehiring the workers who had been laid off just in time for President Bush?s scheduled speech at the NREL.

In his speech the President acknowledged the confusion, ?I recognize that there has been some interesting mixed signals when it comes to funding," President Bush said.

This comes at a time when a new national public opinion survey demonstrates overwhelming public support in the United States for government policies and investments that will support development of alternative energy sources. The survey of 1,000 registered voters was conducted by Public Opinion Strategies of Alexandria, VA, for the Energy Future Coalition. The survey?s findings included:

According to the survery there is nearly unanimous support for a national goal of having 25% of the United States domestic energy needs met by alternative energy by the year 2025. Ninety-eight percent of voters see this goal as important for the country, and three out of four (74%) feel that it is "very important." Ninety percent of voters believe this goal is achievable.

Similar majorities support government action to encourage greater use of renewable energy. Eighty-eight percent of voters favor financial incentives, and 92% support minimum government standards for the use of renewable energy by the private sector.

Nearly all voters (98%) say the costs, such as the cost of research and development and the cost of building new renewable energy production facilities, would be worth it to get the United States to the 25% by 2025 goal.

Voters consider energy to be an important issue facing the country, rating it similarly with health care, terrorism and national security, and education, and ahead of taxes and the war in Iraq. Half (50%) of voters believe America is headed for an energy crisis in the future, and 35% believe the country already is facing a crisis.

So just how much is the United States government spending on alternative energy research? After the 22% increase the budget will stand at $771 million. This amounts to less than one percent of the $55,000 million the federal government spends annually on research, nearly half of which is devoted to healthcare.

It?s time for action.

Alternative Energy Ecuador: 15MW Windfarm for Loja

Vilcabamba, Loja Province, Ecuador

Ecuadorian company Villonaco Wind Power, 80%-owned by Canadian alternative energy generator Protocol Energy, is scheduled to begin construction of a 15MW wind park this month in Ecuador's Loja province, Protocol chairman and CEO Thomas Logan told BNamericas.

Villonaco is 20%-controlled by Loja province-owned generator Enerloja.

Operations are scheduled to commence November-December 2006 on schedule.

So far all funding for the US$26mn project has been provided by Logan and a private placement of up to 1.6 million shares at CDN$0.50/share, which is 50% completed.

Several companies submitted bids to manufacture the wind turbines last May. Villonaco has narrowed the field down to two companies, Spanish wind power firm Gamesa Elica and German wind power equipment manufacturer Nordex, and should announce its decision this month, Logan said.

The turbine tender does not only pertain to this venture but also to two additional investment phases in the country, the second of which is a 30-65MW wind farm in the feasibility stage, with construction scheduled for the first half of 2007. The third investment phase is a 25-40MW expansion of the Villanoco wind farm.

The second level of Protocol's strategy is to launch a wind project in Peru and/or Chile, with internal studies indicating that execution of a 125-150MW program would be appropriate in Chile for 2007.

"Along the Andes in Ecuador, Peru, and Region I and II in Chile you're dealing with a wind regime that blows, in the case of Ecuador, with a median speed of 12.5m/s, so about 80% better than the best wind in Canada. But more importantly, it blows at that level for 13 hours/day," Logan said, adding that the turbines will continue turning 24 hours a day.

The company aims to sell power to mining companies "simply because miners are energy hogs. The average mine has operating costs that are 20% energy-related. They all have the same requirements, which is a stable and guaranteed source of energy at a reasonable price, and wind does that," Logan said.

Within four years Protocol aims to generate 400-500MW of wind, geothermal, biomass and run-of-the-river hydro power through its global endeavors, which have an initial focus in Latin America.

Greg Barker visit: Green Deal skills in Cambridge

Greg Barker visit: Green Deal skills in Cambridge

31 October 2011

DECC Climate Change Minister, Greg Barker, visited Cambridge to meet with local businesses, organisations and stakeholders to discuss energy saving measures and the skills needed to successfully implement the Green Deal.

During the visit South Cambridgeshire District Council showcased their Green Deal preparatory activities, including their Eco Town Rampton Drift project; an initiative that has assessed and retrofitted local homes with domestic energy saving, energy efficiency and microgeneration technologies.

The Minister went on to meet with staff and students at the SmartLife Low Carbon Training Centre in the area to see how the Centre provides innovation, skills and training to Cambridgeshire 14-19 year olds entering the construction industry, aswell as professionals wishing to retrain and householders undertaking "low-carbon" DIY.

Officially opening the Centre, Greg Barker praised their work in helping to tackle consumer reticence through high quality training and investment in skills.

He said:
“We know from research that consumers are wary and confused about taking the plunge into energy efficiency, and want to know that installers have been properly trained…. we've been consulting industry, building on what is already there but aiming to drive people from the lowest to the highest possible workmanship - the kind I see here today.”

Greg Barker at SmartLife Low Carbon Training Centre

Whilst at the Low Carbon Training Centre, following on from the Secretary of State’s and Prime Minister’s Consumer Summit earlier in the month, Greg Barker also held a “mini Consumer Summit” with local consumer groups and installers to encourage dissemination of energy and money saving information to their members and customers.

Before leaving Cambridge, the Minister stopped for a whistle-stop tour of the British Antarctic Survey, who work to make climate science more accessible and lead the World in research in to the Polar regions. BAS science and support staff are based in Cambridge, Antarctica and the Arctic, working together to deliver research that underpins a productive economy and contribute to a sustainable world. As part of the tour BAS staff explained their work on Ice-Core drilling and how it can help measure the changes in concentration of greenhouse gases over 100’s of 1000s of years.
