Improved switch design, great dust collection

Improved switch design, great dust collection

I haven’t had this sander long yet, so my 5 star rating is based on
design and recent performance. After i have used it for a longer
period of time, I’ll come back and update my rating if warranted.

I really want to comment on two aspects of the sander design. First,
the power switch. I’d read in some reviews that the design of the
switch could lead to inadvertent power ons/offs, and when I looked at
the display model at HD, I could see how this would be the case. I
bought it anyway, and was pleasantly surprised when I got it home and
unpacked to see that apparently, Ridgid has redesigned the switch on
newer models (which is the one I bought). The older models have an
orange switch that is not recessed into the body housing of the
sander. The newer versions have a dark gray switch that is well-recessed
into the housing, such that I can’t imagine being able to accidentally
hit it. In fact, they may have recessed the switch a little too well,
but all in all, it looks like a good design change.

Second, the dust collection. I was actually amazed at how well the
dust bag worked on this sander. In fact, it worked so well that I
wouldn’t even consider bothering to connect my shop vac to it. It
didn’t get all of the dust, but close enough not to quibble over, in
my opinion. I didn’t even feel compelled to wear a dust mask or
respirator when sanding my garage, and am very conscientious in using
PPE in my shop. I did, however, use hearing protection.

12 foot cord is a plus, too!

Overall, this sander performs well and if it holds up over time, then
I will be very satisfied.
