Will stain bleed into inlay?

Hey guys, looking for some help here. I have an oak box lid that I stained with a Jacobean color. I want to put some carved pieces of pine as inlay. I’m assuming I have to seal the pine in some way before putting it in the channels I carved in the lid? I’m worried that when I put the poly on it will cause the dark stain to bleed into the light colored pine.

Any tips would be helpful!

The Job Centre Plus Rapid Response Service is available to support individual employees to re-enter the job market. Coryton’s workforce is highly skilled and well-positioned to take advantage of new opportunities.

We want to reassure people that there will not be any impact on fuel supply from this development. Continuing jetty operations at Coryton means that there should be no loss of supply through the terminal to London and the South East.

Closure of the refinery reflects overcapacity in the European refining sector and a number of refineries have closed across Europe in recent years.

We will continue to keep in close contact with the administrators PWC who are looking at further options for the future of the facility”.

Florida Power Reopens $5 Million Solar Rebate Program

Florida Power & Light (FPL) is reopening the application period for its 2011 solar rebate program to distribute approximately $5 million in remaining funds. Applications can be submitted at the FPL website starting at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 30.

The solar power rebates are $2 per watt of the DC output of a PV system, up to $20,000. Rebates will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and funds are expected to run out quickly, FPL says. The application process for the 2011 rebates first opened on June 29, and customers claimed reservations for the available solar PV funds in less than an hour.

Rebates for solar water heating are also still available, FPL adds. The solar water heating rebate is $1,000 per installed solar water heater. According to the FPL as of this writing, there was $124,000 in water heating rebate funds available.

Search for new Coal Authority Chairperson begins

Energy Minister Charles Hendry today announced recruitment has begun for a new Chair of the Coal Authority.

Dr Helen Mounsey’s period of office as Chair comes to an end in March 2013 and the Department are looking to appoint a new Chair from 1st April 2013.

Charles Hendry said:

"Dr Mounsey has been extremely successful as Chair of the Coal Authority for the last six years, and prior to that as a Non-Executive Director. Her expertise will be greatly missed and she will be a tough act to follow.

“This is a high profile role which requires not only the skills of a Chair but experience of the sectors that the Coal Authority works in.”

Notes for editors

1. The Coal Authority is a Department of Energy and Climate Change Non-Departmental Public Body.
2. This appointment is being made in accordance with the requirements of the Code published by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
3. The appointment will commence on 1 April 2012 but we would anticipate the appointee having a handover period with the current Chair prior to this.
4. The appointment is for 5 days a month and remuneration is currently £27,000 per annum.
5. Dr Mounsey was originally appointed as a Non-Executive Board member of the Coal Authority for a five year period from 7 November 2002 and subsequently made Chair in October 2007. She joined the consulting practice of PriceWaterhouseCoopers in 1989, becoming an Associate Partner with IBM Business Consulting Services following the merger of the two organisations in October 2002. Since leaving IBM in January 2009, she has continued to work as an independent consultant in the utilities sector, in parallel to her role as Chair of the Authority.
6. The Coal Authority was established by Parliament in 1994 with specific statutory responsibilities associated with: 
   • licensing coal mining operations in Britain 
   • handling coal mining subsidence damage claims
   • property and historic liability issues, such as treatment of minewater discharges
   • providing public access to information on past and present coal mining operations
   • the provision of emergency call-out service for reported surface hazards.

Written Ministerial Statement: Draft Energy Bill (Pre-Legislative Scrutiny)

Edward Davey, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change

I am pleased to be publishing a draft of the Energy Bill today, in order for Pre-Legislative Scrutiny to be carried out on it.

The draft Bill includes measures necessary to reform the electricity market to deliver secure, clean and affordable electricity.

At the heart of our Electricity Market Reform (EMR) measures are Feed-in-Tariffs with Contracts for Difference (CfDs), long-term instruments which will provide stable and predictable incentives for companies to invest in low-carbon generation. CfDs are more affordable than alternative incentives and will mean a better deal for consumers. Through the work on Final Investment Decisions (FID) Enabling we are committed to working with developers to enable some of this investment to come forward in advance of the CfD regime coming into force, and the Bill contains measures to support this process. This will be complemented by a Capacity Market that will, if required, provide security of electricity supply by ensuring sufficient reliable capacity is available. Measures relating to Conflicts of Interest and Contingency Arrangements will ensure that the System Operator which will deliver these schemes is appropriate. Renewables Transitional measures will ensure that existing investments under the Renewables Obligation remain stable. Finally, an Emissions Performance Standard (EPS) will limit carbon dioxide emissions from the most polluting fossil fuel power stations by setting appropriate standards for all new fossil fuel powered generation. Taken as a whole, EMR will enable large-scale investment in low-carbon generation capacity in the UK and deliver security of supply, in a cost-effective way.

In addition to EMR, the Energy Bill will also improve regulatory certainty by ensuring that Government and Ofgem are aligned at a strategic level through a Strategy and Policy Statement (SPS), as recommended in the Ofgem Review of July 2011.

The Bill also ensures that the Office for Nuclear Regulation will be fully able to meet the future challenges of regulating the nuclear industry, as the first new power plants since the 1980s are built.

Finally, the Bill contains provisions that will enable the sale of the Government Pipeline and Storage System (GPSS). The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology, at the Ministry of Defence is laying a separate Written Ministerial Statement today

I am confident that measures contained in this Energy Bill will enable us to keep the lights on, bills down and air clean. I am pleased to commend it to the House today for PLS and will look forward to the publication of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee’s report.

Why Alternative Energy?

A poll carried carried out for the BBC World Service of nearly 20,000 people from across 19 countries found wide support for alternative energy strategies.

The poll illustrates a perceived triple threat from the way the world produces and uses energy.

Majorities across all 19 countries indicate that citizens fear:

the climate and environment are being harmed
that the global economy will be destabilised
that competition for energy will lead to greater conflict

Some eight out of 10 of those questioned were worried about the threat to the environment. In Australia, Great Britain, Canada and Italy the level of concern topped 90%.

Doug Miller, president of the poll firm GlobeScan, said: "What's fascinating is that in the midst of historically high energy prices and geopolitical tensions, the number one energy concern in every industrialised country we surveyed is the environmental and climate impacts."

Creating tax incentives to encourage the use of alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power found favour with 80% of respondents.

But there was lukewarm support for more nuclear energy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. On average, 49% were in favour of building more nuclear plants.

Majorities of 60% or more in 18 of the 19 countries polled said they feared energy shortages and prices would destabilise the world economy.

The least concerned was Russia, a major oil and gas producer, which benefits from higher prices.

Both US and EU leaders have warned Russia not to use energy as a tool of foreign policy. Earlier this year, the nation's monopoly, Gazprom, cut off gas supplies to Europe during a price dispute with Ukraine.

Some 73% of those questioned were worried that energy shortages would lead to greater conflict among nations.

In total, 19,579 citizens were interviewed in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Egypt, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, Philippines, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Ukraine and the US.

Polling was conducted for the BBC World Service by polling firm GlobeScan and its research partners.

Packages have incorrect size info on them

Well back in December when Peachtree woodworking had a sale I purchased four clamps that are under the Pocket Hole Accessories section. I received them and they appear to be made decently but nothing to write home about, they are cast aluminum and steel but probably good enough. Where the problem lies is the packages say they are useable for stock up to 7/8” thick. Today I went to use them on some 3/4” stock and they would not fit, upon further inspection I found there is no way to get a 3/4” piece of wood in them. Very disappointed in this as I was planning on using them for alot of utility work that gets pocket hole screws.

Queen?s Speech: 'Reform of the electricity market'

Her Majesty The Queen today delivered her annual speech at the state opening of Parliament.

As part of her speech the Queen announced that the Government will propose reforms to the electricity market.

“My Government will propose reform of the electricity market to deliver secure, clean and affordable electricity and ensure prices are fair”, the Queen said.

The Energy Bill aims to reform the electricity market to enable large-scale investment in low-carbon generation capacity in the UK and deliver security of supply, in a cost-effective way.

Commentating on the forthcoming Energy Bill, a DECC spokeswoman said:

““This is crucial legislation.  The Energy Bill would reform the electricity market to keep the lights on and emissions down in a more cost-effective way, while reaping the economic benefits. 

“It is designed to provide investors with long-term certainty and incentives to invest in low-carbon.

“We will shortly publish a draft Bill for pre-legislative scrutiny, to enable swift passage of well considered legislation.

“We are publishing the Bill in draft in order to speed up its passage through Parliament and to enable pre-legislative scrutiny which will help make the legislation more robust.
This will not delay the date at which the reforms are introduced, and making it available for pre-legislative scrutiny has been welcomed by industry and the opposition.

“We anticipate legislation reaching the statute book in 2013 so that the first low-carbon projects can be supported (as we originally envisaged) in 2014."

New Shop Project #4: Shop Cabinets Arrived Today

Cabinets arrived today … these came from RedLine Garage Gear of Green Bay.

Looks like pretty high quality stuff … paint is powder-coat, drawers are dovetailed birch, and the hardware is first rate (full extension drawer slides, euro-style hinges, etc.).

I had originally planned on building cabinets myself, but it would have taken months, and I finally decided I would rather use my time builidng stuff I want to build (cabinets aren’t really my thing)!
