Commercialisation competition closes for CCS bids

Commercialisation competition closes for CCS bids

At midday today the UK’s £1bn CCS competition closed to bids.

A Department of Energy and Climate Change spokesman said: “There has been significant interest from industry, with a good range of applications received.

“We will be carrying out an initial review of each bid before making further details available in the next few weeks. Decisions on which projects to support will be made in the autumn following an assessment and evaluation process.

“The UK has one of the best offers anywhere in the world for CCS and this competition is an important step to reach our aim of a cost competitive CCS industry in the 2020s.

Notes for Editors

  1. For more information on the competition and the Government’s plans for CCS see our press notice on 3 April
  2. The Department of Energy and Climate Change set out the first UK CCS Roadmap in April. It explains the action the Government is taking to enable the development of a new world-leading CCS industry in the 2020s, including:
  • the competition, the ‘CCS Commercialisation Programme’, to drive down costs by supporting practical experience in the design, construction and operation of commercial scale CCS with £1bn capital funding, and additional support, subject to affordability, through low carbon Contracts for Difference;
  • £125m funding for Research and Development, including a new £20m innovation competition to support the development and demonstration of CCS at component and pilot scale;
  • planned long term Contracts for Difference through Electricity Market Reforms to drive investment in commercial scale CCS in the 2020s and beyond;
  • commitments to working with industry to address other important areas including developing skills and the supply chain, storage and assisting the development of CCS infrastructure; and
  • a focus on international engagement, in particular on learning from other projects around the world to help accelerate cost reduction in the UK, and sharing the knowledge we have generated through our programme
