an expanding walnut dining table

an expanding walnut dining table

here’s an expanding walnut dining table we recently shipped to new york city .. we worked closely with a local interior designer who was in charge of the project and it is our first use of radiating crotch walnut veneers as a central inlay theme. the veneers were shop sawn .1” thick and inlaid into the top and the leaves. the veneers were resawn from a single pattern triangle that when cut, made up the veneers for the leaves and the round parts of the table. the base was executed full size by using plywood patterns generated from the cad drawing to determine the angles and curves of the half lapped base base parts and verticals. in this case, we started from the top down, working upside down and checking the fit with the cross piece after it was glued up. the verticals are curved and tapered, giving the base an ‘upward’ feeling. with the moin hardware 2.5” high equalizing table slides, the table was surprisingly rigid even when fully extended. more info and pictures regarding the construction on my dorset custom furniture blog.
