Going for growth means going for green

Going for growth means going for green

Newly-appointed Energy and Climate Change Secretary Edward Davey will hit the ground running today, joining Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg in sending a clear signal that green growth and green jobs will remain at the heart of the Coalition’s strategy for economic recovery.

Visiting the Building Research Establishment’s Innovation Park near Watford, a testing site for green homes, they will meet graduates considering moving into green construction jobs.

The Deputy Prime Minister will say:

“The race is on to lead the world in clean, green energy. Last year we saw record-breaking global investment in renewables - outstripping the cash piled into fossil fuels. The new economic powerhouses - China, India, Korea, Brazil - are now serious contenders for that capital.

“So the choice for the UK is simple: wake up, or end up playing catch up. In today’s world the savviest states understand that going for growth means going green. Low-carbon markets are the next frontier in the battle for global pre-eminence.

“We have every reason to be confident. The combination of enviable wind, wave and tidal power, a world-beating research base and a proud history of engineering give the UK a clear competitive edge. So we’re already in pole position. But the reality is: we need to sharpen our elbows if we want to stay ahead.

“I want the UK to be the number one destination for green investment. We’re in this race to win it.”

Mr Davey, who was appointed to the Cabinet by the Prime Minister on Friday, is a trained economist and an environmental campaigner since university. He will say today:

“I have long believed in the need to marry our economic and environmental agendas. Greening the economy isn't just good for the planet - it's good for the wallets, purses and pockets of every British citizen too.

“By focusing on the low carbon industries of the future we can rebalance our economy, reducing our dependence on the City of London on the one hand, and on oil and gas imports from unstable parts of the world on the other.

“My priorities are very simple: green jobs, green growth and getting the best deal for energy bill payers. My department is already implementing bold and ambitious reforms - like electricity market reform and the Green Deal - to unlock private investment, drive innovation and build a resilient, green, competitive economy. It's now my job to see those through.

“There may have been a change at the helm, but there'll be no change in direction or ambition.”

UK OFFSHORE WIND SUPPLY CHAIN

At today’s meeting of the Offshore Wind Developers’ Forum, co-chaired by DECC Minister Charles Hendry, the sector will confirm their vision that UK firms should provide more than 50% of the content of future windfarms. Having started from a low base, there is already growth in the proportion of UK content in offshore wind. For example, Robin Rigg windfarm has a UK content of 32%.

Today’s announcement reflects recent developments in the UK’s offshore wind supply chain. In December Siemens announced they are moving forward with a turbine manufacturing plant in Hull. In January the Port of Sheerness submitted a planning application for the development of the manufacturing facility proposed by Vestas. Gamesa have announced their intention to make the UK the main focus of their worldwide offshore wind business. And, just last week, David Brown, a prime example of British engineers at the cutting edge of new technology, announced a major new contract to build gearboxes for Samsung.

COMMUNITY GRANTS

The Energy and Climate Change Secretary also today announced that 155 community energy projects across the country have won a share of £5.1 million of funding from the Local Energy Assessment Fund. The winning bids include projects to demonstrate wall insulation to the public, schemes to check the energy efficiency of homes and events to promote energy efficiency in local communities.

The funding comes as the Government gears up for the launch of the Green Deal later this year, the first scheme of its kind in the world, aimed at radically overhauling the energy efficiency of millions of homes across the UK.

Mr Davey said:

“The big national challenges of keeping the lights on and emissions down can be tackled in small ways in our homes and local communities. These grants are designed to nurture the ideas and enthusiasm of communities up and down the country who want to cut energy use, cut emissions and save money.”

Notes for editors

  1. The BRE Innovation Park is a world leading and ground breaking demonstration development designed to give a glimpse of how the future delivery of sustainable buildings and communities can be achieved not only in the UK but around the world. It features eight of the world's most sustainable houses.
  2. The full list of Local Energy Assessment Fund grants being announced today will be available on the DECC Community Energy website. This is the second round of awards under the £10 million fund which was announced on 7 December.

Roof Solar Tiles for Alternative Power Production

Needless to say, when it comes to alternative forms of energy, roof solar tiles or shingles are simply one of the best and innovative means by which a home owner is able to gather and harness the energy coming from the sun with the purpose of generating sufficient electrical power needed to run the small appliances and devices at home. These days, home owners have roofing tile materials to cover up the homes and protect them from natural elements, but it seems to be such a waste that it just sits there and do nothing when if fact, it can do more than just an effective home covering. It is definitely time to put such tiles to useful work by generating significant power for use in the homes.

Solar roofing tiles

One might not believe it, but if he engages in photovoltaic roofing, the use of such high technology can actually save the home owner almost 60 percent of the cost of home power that he consumes every month. For those who have small businesses such as a grocery or a convenience store or even a small office, such sun power technology can definitely work to provide alternative energy in the form of solar power so long as one has a roof on which to install solar gadgets on.

Surely, many consumers and home owners already know about the fact that sun-based power is a form of energy that is totally clean and does not cause any harmful pollution to our environment. Solar roof tiles for example do not need any fuel for them to run and they only need the rays of the sun to function; and most importantly they do it in a very quiet way. Yes, all that a consumer needs when he decides to utilize photovoltaic roof tiles are the light coming from the sun. This should never be a problem since sunshine abound in great amount for the sun-powered tiles as they are located on top of one?s abode, where all the rays of the sun fall down. Indeed, as long as sun light is available, solar shingles or tiles will keep on generating solar energy.

Roof Solar Tiles

Indeed, there is now the photovoltaic roofing technology that is easily available, wherein photovoltaic solar cells are utilized as efficient components of solar roofing tiles. Definitely such types of tiles are relatively new and unique if only because these gadgets do not only function as a rooftop component but they are also meant to produce alternative form of power for household use. Of course, the more conventional ones such as the residential home solar panels have been around for many years now. However, a good number of property owners are wary about using such devices because they are considered to be very bulky and heavy. In cases of storms or other natural calamities, there is a great possibility for the sun-powered panels to be damaged. In the other hand, when it comes to roof solar tiles, people will be able to avoid such problems but will still be able to benefit from solar power.

When it comes to advantages and benefits, people are assured that there are a lot of them when it comes to using photovoltaic roofing. One of the advantages is that they not only exist in your roof in order to collect and generate energy, but of course, just like any other type of roof tiling materials, solar roof tiles provide the same type of durability and protection that you want over your heads. Actually, whatever protection benefits that one can get from the standard type of tiles, he can also get this from the sun powered ones. Of course, this is also aside from the fact that they are appealing and certainly adds a great amount of aesthetics to one?s property

Sun Roof Tile Manufacturers

In the United States, there are two corporations that are in the forefront when it comes to the production and distribution of sun-powered roof tiles; these are the Dow Chemical Company and SRS Energy Co. Dow Chemical, primarily a chemical company, utilizes copper indium gallium diselenide film in the harnessing of sun power. While the product of Dow is not as effective as the conventional type, they are very inexpensive and cheap to install. On the other hand, SRS Energy is the manufacturer of Sole Power Tile, product that works on the principle of photovoltaic roofing. SRS?s Tiles has an edge at it is quite pleasing in appearance, being made in ceramics.

Solar Roof Installation

If a home owner decides that he wants to replace his old roofing of his home with that of photovoltaic roofing, it is very possible. All that one has to do is install them on top of the roof and certainly, they will begin the process of sun power generation for the advantage and use of the household. For those who have no roof experience or do not have the time to do the installation, they can always employ a roof professional to do all the installing work. There is little to worry about as the expenses needed to install roof solar tiles are quite low.

Another thing to remember is that the components of such sun powered devices are very light in weight, which means it will cause no damage to the roof of the property, but instead will protect and secure it all the more. This is aside from the fact that alternative energy derived from the rays of the sun is created for use of the household, which is its primary purpose and function in the first place.

Indeed, when it comes to getting alternative energy, particularly one coming from the sun, a home owner can take advantage of his rooftop by installing roof solar tiles all over it, instead of the conventional shingles. Nowadays, tiles are no longer just meant to provide security and protection on top of the head but they are also useful gadgets which efficiently work to create viable alternative energy that?s excellent for home use.

Edward Davey response to Guardian wind power articles

Edward Davey response to Guardian wind power articles

27 February 2012

Edward Davey told the Guardian:

“A responsible energy policy for this country is one that rules IN all of the key low carbon technologies to help us keep the lights on and emissions down.

“Ruling any of them OUT would be folly.  It would mean one less way of cutting our dependence on imported gas, one less way of cutting our carbon emissions.  And it would hit consumers where it hurts.

“Onshore wind is the cheapest of the renewables – in fact we’ve already proposed cutting the subsidy to reflect falling costs.

“Abandoning it now would force us to rely more heavily than envisaged on offshore wind before that becomes cheaper, adding a further £5 to every annual household bill by the middle of the decade.

“Built in the right places, and with the benefits for local communities we’re introducing, onshore wind has a crucial role to play.

“We need a portfolio of all the available technologies and the investment and jobs that comes with it.   That’s what the coalition is united behind and it’s what MPs from all parties voted overwhelmingly in favour of last year.”

Solar Panels for Home - Saving Our Environment

If you find that you develop great interest in building or installing any form of alternative energy source on your abode, you should realize that solar panels for home belong to the best and most effective, this apart from the numerous benefits that they offer. Despite the initally high solar panel costs, in the long run, you will benefit from potential savings on the budget. But most important of all, we have to realize the importance that these solar panels provide to our environment. Indeed, it is the environment aspect of its usage that encourages a great number of home owners to try this solar gadgets.

Today unfortunately, much of the electrical power the businesses, companies and residences is still derived from fossil and carbon fuel sources from power stations. The fact is that gas, Oil and coal are considered the mainstay in the generation of power - for more than 50 years. This constant combustion of such fossil fuels leads to a seriously dramatic impact everywhere, on our environment. And the effect of these fuels means serious damage, to the detriment of worldwide ecosystems and natural habitats. Some of the visible bad effects include acid rain and atmospheric pollution, two of which contribute to worldwide climate change.

Nuclear or atomic power stations are now being built by many countries around the world. Such energy sources definitely cannot be considered as green, in fact they are considered by many critics as downright dangerous. Actually, the waste coming from nuclear stations, will remain with us for a long time and continue to haunt and harm us and many generations to come.

Solar panels for home are the best means for conscientious citizens of the world to reduce carbon footprint. This alternative source of power, the solar panels homes will surely lead to a much greener and cleaner environment. If home owners would simply switch power usage from electricity to solar power, then much of the environmental and ecological problems of our world will surely be eliminated.

There is actually indirect negative effect to the ecosystems caused by gas, oil and coal. We need not go any farther - there is the oil spill that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico The damage caused by this unfortunate incident is still innumerable. And unfortunately, years and even decades will be needed before we can see and experience the same level or standard of biodiversity of the gulf as before.

When home owners are to consider the options when they decide that they want to install solar panels for home, they likewise start to comprehend understand the wastefulness and frivolity that the society has become. We realize that we cannot be less economizing by leaving on light bulbs during the evening, keeping appliances turned on when if unnecessary and selecting to use cooling and heating gadgets without even caring if they are energy efficient or not. If you install a home solar panel, definitely you will also be able to develop economizing habits that will result in the reduction of electrical usage consumed.

And with the solar panel costs reducing annually, while their quality improving more constantly - one should realize that the best time on which to switch sources of residential power is now.

Wood ID Help needed...

IMG_4263

All wood was harvested from Central MD. This first picture the wood virtually has no bark, more like a skin. The wood appears quite white and very dense. The outside of the tree has ridges and grooves that look almost serpent-like.

IMG_4264

The second picture has wood with a sharp flakey bark and the wood coloration is cherry like.

IMG_4265

The third picture wood has thin very textured bark and the wood is quite dense and smooth. If it weren’t for the contrasting colors of the heartwood through the sapwood, I would think it would be a type of maple. But that color is throwing me off.

IMG_4266

The last picture wood has a stark difference in color from the heartwood to the sapwood and the outside of the bark is covered where many small branches shot out. The bark is kind of stringy and wood itself is dense.

I also picked up a bunch of Sycamore and hopefully some black walnut coming next week, but I can easily ID those woods.

Thanks your help.

Miter - RAS - Drum - Wall #2: 70 gallons of planer chips and counting.....

Wow – lots of chips on this project…...I’m on my 3rd round of dressing out the rough Oak and the chip bag has been emptied 3 times…...I figure that at least 70 gallons of chips on this one so far….

I got this rough oak really cheap (a pickup truck load for ~$100) and it was all 8/4, but have to plane it all down 1-3/8” before all the twists and bows come out. This is one of the prices you pay for low cost lumber….

Good news is I’ve found a good application for this solid wood and I’m freeing up some needed lumber storage space!

Some of this oak looks good – especially the last planer batch:

For superdave – there are PLENTY of cool knots lurking in this project…..plenty…

Some additional progress: Note – None of the fences have been built and the tables are still loose…...

Decided to build lumber storage for 3’-4’ stock to the left of the miter saw:

With infeed table mockup:

Added some slide-outs for tool storage using full extension slides:

Another shot of the tool slides + my garage sale $2 grinder/wire wheel rig mounted on a french cleat – I think it might work in this spot…...

Thinking about building an “L” counter on this corner and pickup up the spindle sander (getting rid of the metal stand) and leaving it open for the shop vac underneath…....The dust collector really doesn’t work good on these small dust ports…

All the pieces are anchored to the wall, and a few are nailed to the floor – so she is really rigid…........

More to come…..

Thanks for looking.

Why such method and forgo the traditional way of heating water? First of all, even if the solar hot water systems prices can be expensive, it is economical in the long run as the energy that is utilized is that from the sun. On the other hand, everyday heating is done which the traditional means are used such as electricity or gas. The use of such power in order to enjoy hot water means high costs added to the monthly budget of the consumer.

Solar Hot Water Systems Prices ? High yet worth it in the Long Run

Needless to say, solar heating means of enjoying hot water is one of the most cost-effective energy systems available. What?s great about the sun power heating systems is that there is not so much maintenance needed; usually general checking should be done once or twice a year. While expensive, it does prove to be a good choice as far as efficiency in energy as well as the protection and saving of the environment is concerned.

Two Palm Routers Will Enter One Will Leave!

Two Palm Routers Will Enter One Will Leave!

So awhile back I knew the time had come to get into the palm router game. I know some woodworkers are loyal to one brand and their shop is a “Jet Shop” or a “Powermatic” shop. My tool collection seems to be pretty varied although I have exiled ALL that is Harbor Freight! So when I started my research on palm routers there seemed to be two major contenders for the title.

The Bosch Colt found for about $90 as a stand alone or $180 as a complete package with lots of accessories and bases.

Variable speed dial lets you match speed to workpiece and task.
Soft-start reduces start-up torque.
Constant Response Circuitry monitors and maintains speed under load.
Quick-Clamp System allows motor to be easily adjusted or moved from base to base. Liar liar pants on fire says I.
Convenient front spindle lock for fast, easy one-wrench bit changes.
Rubberized grip and unique finger support pockets provide additional support when trimming edges.
All-metal straight-edge guide directs router along edges of workpiece or up to 3-5/8” from edge.
Fast and precise depth adjustment system with micro-fine adjustment dial.
Accepts 1/4” shank bits.

And the Dewalt DWP611PK which runs about $115 stand alone or $180 with the plunge base.

Router Type Combination (Fixed & Plunge)
Power Used (Amps) 7
Operating Input Voltage 110 volt / 120 volt @ 60hz (North America)
Horsepower (HP) 1.25 HP (.25 more than the Bosch)
RPM (Rotations Per Minute) 16,000 to 27,000 (Bosch does go to a higher RPM 35k)
Collet Diameter 1/4-Inch
Plunge Stroke 2-inch
Spindle Lock Yes (The DeWalt lock only takes a tiny bit of depressing to lock which is awesome!)
Collet Capacity 1/4-inch
Base Dimensions 4-inch standard and 4-3/8-inch x 5-3/4-inch plunge

After going back and forth and talking to a few fellow woodworkers and Bosch owners, I finally settled on the Bosch Colt stand alone. So I grabbed it at Rockler and headed home to flush trim some book case parts. I soon realized my mistake… In paying attention to mostly price and not extensively handling the product in the store I made an impulsive purchase. I realized my mistake the first time I tried to adjust the bit height… it was difficult and not precise. Basically it’s a twist the unit to unlock adjust-ability and then twist the motor back to lock it in place. The problem with this is that it just doesn’t have that “I’m totally in control” feeling when adjusting the bit height. I started to play the “No that’s too low… no now that’s too high.” Eventually I got fed up and visions of returning it started to cloud my mind. I first decided to give it a fair shot before sending it packing. The adjustment clamp seemed to be holding on too tightly to allow easy adjustments so i tried to fine tune it’s hold. My efforts to dial in that adjustment clamp failed miserably. While routing a small dado I noticed the motor slowly slipping lower. That was it back to Rockler you go young Colt. If there is a company out there in the woodworking industry that understands customers service it’s Rockler. I took the Bosch router back and explained that I wanted to get the DeWalt instead they took it back with a smile on their face and I paid the difference. After getting in a few uses on the DeWalt I quickly realized it was by far that better of the two routers. Large adjustments can be done quickly by squeezing two unlock tabs on the side of the base and fine adjustments are accomplished by twisting the adjustment ring for slow fine adjustments. Plus the DeWalt includes creature comforts like bottom mounted LED lights, slow start, and easy spindle lock button, and a base that has better visibility than the all metal Bosch base. I haven’t tried the plunge base yes but if it functions as smoothly as the fixed base I’m sure I’ll have no issues.

My father-in-law said it best “Buy right and cry once.” I this case if you’re looking to jump into the arena of palm routers I’d tell you just get the DeWalt you won’t regret it!
