I’ve just started using my new Delta 1/2 hp hollow chisel mortiser. I’ve gone through and tuned it a la Wood Whisperer and sharpened and honed my chisels on both the outside and inside (using the LV cone sharpeners). It’s mortising a lot better than when I tried it out of the box, but I’m still not all that happy with the results.
Many have pointed out the chisels themselves are mediocre. Has anyone upgraded to the Lee Valley or other brand chisels on the Delta? How much of a difference do they make? They start at $42 for the 1/4” and go up from there, so replacing a set of 4 would be cost me another $175 or so.
