Would this be a waste of money?

I'm looking for a decently powerful, 1/2" router to use (pretty much exclusively) in a thicknessing sled that I'm going to be building. From what I've read on old threads here, variable speed seems to be pretty important.

I'm keeping an eye out for something like an old Hitachi M12V, but this one has made me curious:
