My world of turning #1: In the beginning...
My first lathe arrived yesterday! I ordered the “12 VS lathe from Penn State Industries. The instructions were minimal, but assembly went very smoothly and setting the machine up was no problem. Within about 1-1/2 hours I was ready to start making my first wood chips. I also ordered a starter kit and a number of accessories at the same time so that I should have everything I need to get started making pens.
I wanted to keep it simple for the first try at woodturning. I found a 3/4” sq scrap piece of poplar that was laying around. I just wanted to use the gouge, parting tool, and skew to experiment with each and get a feel for them. I think I’ll try sharpening them and poke at the scrap wood for a bit and experiment with some finishing techniques as well before I make my first attempt to produce an actual pen… :)
This is also my first attempt at a blog to journal my progress, so we’ll just see how things progress from here. This seemed like a perfect subject to start with since I am new to turning and can document my journey from the beginning. :)

Solar Power - Does the value outweigh the costs?
With solar power, not many of us know how the cost of solar panels is measured. We also don?t immediately see the relationship between the cost of solar power and the value of solar power.
Solar panel costs are not as easy to figure out as the cost of a tank of gas. When you purchase a tank, the value of the tank is enjoyed and used more or less immediately. When it comes to solar panels, the value is delivered over a number of years. So, how much do solar panels cost, and does their value outweigh the cost?
First, let?s take on the cost of solar panels. Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels ? which turn the sun?s rays into electricity ? are usually priced in dollars per watt ($/W). When you buy a home solar energy system, you are paying for the ability to generate electricity for the present and into the future.
One of the biggest concerns deals with the out-of-pocket costs of a solar PV system. So, how much will you paying? Remember, each solar home project is different so the cost can vary from house to house. Also, it can differ from region to region because solar rebates and solar tax credits are often made available at the state and/or local level. (Don?t forget ? all U.S. homeowners with federal income tax liability can take advantage of a federal solar energy tax credit worth 30 percent of system costs.) Here are a few resources that may help with solar energy costs:
- The Open PV Project passes on pricing information from solar installers across the country. At this time in 2010, the national average cost of solar PV was $7.62 per watt. Not all solar companies participate in the project, but the data will offer a good idea at how much homeowners across America are paying for solar power.
- Some states mandate solar installers to report the prices of their solar installations. In these states, officials may withhold solar rebates if numbers aren?t submitted. For example, Pennsylvania?s Sunshine Solar Rebate Program reported a median cost of $5.92/W for residential solar energy projects. Go Solar California gives quarterly updates on residential solar costs, which in 2010 are averaging about $7.50 per watt.
- Using a default value of $7.00/W for residential solar projects is a reasonable figure. This pre-incentive figure will be lowered by the solar rebates and tax credits that are available in your area.
- It is crucial to always get more than one solar home energy quote. It is recommended to receive three estimates from qualified solar installers. The best way to know for sure how much solar panels for your home will cost is to receive a hard proposal from a solar company.
Assuming a pre-incentive cost of $7.00/W, an average 5-kW system would have a total cost of $35,000 ($7.00W X 5,000 W = $35,000). Solar rebates and the 30 percent federal solar tax credit would further reduce the cost.
What about the value of solar panels? Does it outweigh the cost?
Once again, the answer depends on each particular project and region. In states that are ?good? for solar ? such as Arizona, California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Colorado and Hawaii among others ? a solar panel system can pay for itself in as little as three to five years along with delivering long-term energy savings.
When thinking about solar energy for your home, you should consider the following factors, each of them contribute to solar panels? return on investment:
The price you pay for electricity. Homeowners who already pay a high per-kilowatt hour price for electricity will see the biggest financial return.
The solar energy incentives available in your area. In some states you may be eligible to sell solar renewable energy credits (SRECs). This is a residential solar energy system that will not only cut you?re electric bill, but also generate income beyond just utility savings.
The amount of sunshine in your area. Solar systems do produce more power in sunnier regions.
Don?t forget that solar will have a positive impact on your home value. Solar panels reduce a home?s overall cost of ownership and therefore improve its overall value.
There are many solar power projects that are significantly lowering homeowners? electricity bills and offering a good return on investment. This suggests that the value of solar panels considerably exceeds the costs. Admittedly, in states where local incentives for solar power are weak and/or electricity is relatively inexpensive, such as Kentucky and Nevada, it?s tough to determine if the value of solar is greater than the costs.
Solar panels are quickly becoming more affordable. In the future, it is likely that more and more states will takes steps to promote solar power and the value of a home solar energy system will be strong for homeowners in all fifty states.

Solar Shades for Windows
The day today is so hot that you can hardly breathe. The humidity is too much that you and everyone else is breaking into sweat. What makes it worse is that sun rays are able to go through your windows, making the heat inside a lot more unbearable. What should you do to lessen such inconvenience? The only solution there is ? and these are solar shades for windows, which is known to be an effective way of reducing the heat from the sun that goes inside your home. They do this by blocking the rays that peer through with the panes of your windows. Indeed, such window treatment device is so effective that it greatly minimize the total heat that accumulates in the interior of your home. When building a piece of furniture (one that includes drawers) from a specific hardwood such as maple or cherry, should the internal boxes of the drawers also be built out of such an expensive wood? Or could a less expensive wood be substituted appropriately without looking out of place? Consider that most modern pieces use plywood for the drawer bottoms. If you want the drawer bottoms to match the sides of the drawer, they should be made out of similar materials, and finding cherry or maple plywood is quite difficult. Of course, one could create the bottom drawer panels by clamping a number of boards together, but is it worth the expense?
Typically in such cases, I'll build drawer boxes out of poplar, a stable and much less expensive wood, and then use either birch or regular sanded plywood for the drawer bottom. The poplar provides a nice contrast to the hardwood when the drawers are opened, and I don't feel that the difference in color between the hardwood cherry or maple and poplar looks out of place at all. Conversely, when using half-blind dovetails, the contrast in color actually seems to accentuate the craftsmanship.

Earth Day Berkeley: Helping people with the Solar Decision
Original Moravian Workbenches at Old Salem
The forms of workbenches that interest me the the most are (spoiler alert) the older and simpler forms that haven?t been corrupted by unnecessary complexities that woodworkers want to heap upon them.
In other words, I want to see benches that have seen real work.
At the Old Salem Museums and Gardens in Winston-Salem, N.C., the reproduction joiner and cabinetmaker?s shop has three excellent workbenches that the costumed interpreters work on. Those are fantastic benches, but they weren?t the ones I?d come to see.
Instead, I?d come to see original Moravian workbenches, including one likely dating back to the 18th century, that Old Salem has in its warehouse.
?These benches are one of Old Salem?s hidden assets,? said Brian Coe, the director of interpretation at Old Salem. ?They?ve only been out a few times for exhibits, and on Roy Underhill?s show.?
Underhill showed off some of the benches on episode 2710, which you can watch for free online at the PBS web site here.
And on Saturday, Coe was happy to show me and a small group of woodworkers the benches they had in storage. Though Coe is the director of interpretation at Old Salem, he spent 15 years working as a woodworking interpreter for the museum. He?s built copies of the Moravian benches, including two that are used in the shops that people visit every day. And Old Salem is in the middle of building a reproduction of its oldest known bench.
And Coe has done extensive research on the benches and the woodworkers who used them ? he even has many of the original tools from the makers who worked in Old Salem. And he?s generated a big fat file of shop drawings and original documentation on the benches and craftsmen.
?Now I just need the time to write a book on the benches,? Coe said with a smile.
An 18th-Century Bench?
The older benches at Old Salem are made from oak, and the oldest bench in the museum?s collection looks to be made from pieces that could have been left over from construction the timbered houses at Old Salem. The mouldings and details on the bench?s base match many found at the settlement.
This old bench is absolutely massive with an 8?-long trestle base and a massive oak top that lacks a tool tray. At some time during its life, its owners sawed off the ends of the top, removing the original vises. However, Coe pointed out that they left us clues as to how the bench was outfitted.
At the left end of the bench, Coe pointed out the large tenons that were likely used to support a structure for a shoulder vise. And on the right end, there are remnants of what Coe suspects was a traditional tail vise. The top was likely 10'-long Coe guesses. I didn?t have a tape measure on me, but I?d guess that the top was about 28" to 30" off the floor.
The woodworkers are currently at work building a reproduction of this bench. The base is complete and in the joiner?s shop. Next comes the top, along with their best guesses as to what sort of vises it had.
Karsten Petersen Workbench
Perhaps the most interesting bench in the Old Salem collection is one of the three workbenches owned by Karsten Petersen (1776-1857), who lived in Denmark and Germany before coming to the Old Salem community in the early 19th century (read more about Petersen here).
Coe built a reproduction of Petersen?s workbench, which features an interesting shoulder vise, a tail vise and a curious extra row of dogs on the front edge of the bench.
The shoulder vise is interesting because Petersen angled the extra leg required to support the shoulder vise so that the leg joined the sled foot at the base. This keeps the leg out of your way so you don?t trip over it and the bench takes up less floor space.
The horizontal row of dog holes is a bit of a mystery to Coe. Few benches show up with this feature. And judging from the fact that they show little use indicates that they probably weren?t used much.
The holes closest to the tail vise show some wear. The ones near the shoulder vise show no wear. They could have been used to pinch work so you can work on it on edge, though Coe concedes that the grip isn?t all that great.
They could have been used at times to support some boards on edge ? one end would be clamped in the shoulder vise and the far end would be propped on a dog sticking out of the front of the benchtop. Coe also points out that pulling the drawer out slightly allows you to use that as a support when planing long pieces.
The reproduction of the bench, built in the 1990s, sits under a window in the joiner?s shop at Old Salem and sees a lot of daily use.
There were more benches, but this entry is entirely too long. So I?ll save those for later this week
