Pecan natural edge ( bowl ?)

Pecan natural edge ( bowl ?)

This is my first try at turning a natural edge bowl. The bowl would have been deeper, and look more like a bowl
had I not been scared it would blow out. I hit a large worm hole with the worm still in it so I decided I better quit turning.

Statistical press release: UK energy statistics

Statistical press release: UK energy statistics

Energy Trends and Quarterly Energy Prices publications are published today 20 December 2012 by the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Energy Trends covers statistics on energy production and consumption, in total and by fuel, and provides an analysis of the year on year changes, and now includes a section on renewables.

Quarterly Energy Prices covers prices to domestic and industrial consumers, prices of oil products and comparisons of international fuel prices.

The main points for the third quarter of 2012 are:

  • Indigenous production of fuels in the UK fell by 7.3 per cent in the third quarter of 2012 compared with a year earlier. Production of oil fell by 12.1 per cent whilst gas fell by 11.3 as a result of maintenance work and delays on a number of fields.
  • Total primary energy consumption for energy uses rose by 1.2 per cent. A similar rise is seen in the temperature corrected data.
  • Of electricity generated in the third quarter of 2012, gas accounted for 28.2 per cent (it’s lowest third quarter share for 14 years) due to high prices, whilst coal accounted for 35.4 per cent (it’s highest third quarter share for 14 years). Nuclear generation accounted for 22.3 per cent, whilst renewables share of electricity generation increased by 2.6 percentage points to 11.7 per cent in the third quarter of 2012. Overall low carbon fuels accounted for a record share of 34.0 per cent of generation.
  • Offshore wind increased by 54 per cent, with onshore wind up by 38 per cent due to increased capacity, whilst hydro output fell by 16 per cent as a result of lower rainfall in North Scotland.
  • Provisional data for 2012 suggest that for fixed consumption levels of electricity of 3,300 kWh per annum, bills increased by £25 to £478; and for fixed consumption levels of gas of 18,000 kWh per annum, bills increased by £79 to £798.

Rooftop Solar Power To Be Installed By US Military

Why is Uncle Sam going solar? It can save BIG money.

Washington D.C. ? U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced a $344 million loan guarantee that will support the SolarStrong Project, which is expected to be a record expansion of residential rooftop solar power in the United States.  Under the SolarStrong Project, SolarCity Corporation will install, own and operate up to 160,000 rooftop solar installations on as many as 124 U.S. military bases in up to 33 states.  SolarCity expects the project to fund approximately 750 construction jobs over five years and 28 full time operating jobs.  Many of the jobs are expected to be filled by U.S. veterans and military family members, who will be recruited, trained and employed to install, operate and maintain the photovoltaic (PV) systems.

?This is the largest domestic residential rooftop solar project in history,? said Secretary Chu.  ?This groundbreaking project is expected to create hundreds of jobs for Americans and provide clean, renewable power to our military families. It can also be a model for other large-scale rooftop solar projects that help America regain its lead in the solar industry.?

The project, which could create up to 371 megawatts of new solar capacity, includes the installation of residential rooftop PV systems on existing privatized military family residences and other privatized buildings, such as community centers, administrative offices, maintenance buildings and storage warehouses.  The project will provide low-cost, renewable electricity to privatized military housing and is expected to avoid over 250,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.  The SolarStrong Project will have the added benefit of helping the Department of Defense (DOD), the single-largest energy consumer in the U.S., secure its energy needs from domestic renewable sources that are independent from the utility grid, at no additional cost to taxpayers.  DOD has a stated goal that 25 percent of all energy consumed by 2025 shall be supplied from renewable sources.

The project will be rolled out over five years, starting with a four megawatt installation at Hickam Air Force base in Hawaii, with construction currently underway.  SolarStrong is expected to sell electricity produced from the projects through long-term electricity sales agreements or lease solar systems through long-term lease contracts.

USRG Renewable Finance, an affiliate of US Renewables Group, is acting as lead lender in partnership with Bank of America Merrill Lynch.  USRG Renewable Finance submitted the application under the Financial Institution Partnership Program (FIPP).  In a FIPP financing, the Department of Energy guarantees up to 80 percent of a loan provided to a renewable energy project by qualified financial institutions.

The Department of Energy's Loan Programs Office administers three separate programs:  the Title XVII Section 1703 and Section 1705 loan guarantee programs, and the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing (ATVM) loan program.   The loan guarantee programs support the deployment of commercial technologies along with innovative technologies that avoid, reduce, or sequester greenhouse gas emissions, while ATVM supports the development of advanced vehicle technologies.  To date, the Department has issued loans, loan guarantees or offered conditional commitments for loan guarantees totaling nearly $40 billion to support more than 40 clean energy projects across the United States, including several of the world?s largest solar generation facilities, three geothermal projects, the world?s largest wind farm, and the nation?s first new nuclear power plant in three decades.

Solar Electricity Panel ? Best for those who Love to Stay Outdoor

For those who do not know it yet, solar electricity panel is a device installed usually on the roof top and is powered by the rays of the sun. The energy that it gets from the sun is converted into electricity to be used as power for the appliances that you owned. What?s best about solar electricity panels is that you only have to pay for the device; after that, there is no more expenses to pay as solar energy is a abundant and free source of power for everyone to take advantage of. One great thing about this type of flexible solar panels is that they help in taking care of the environment all over the world, not only for our generation?s sake but for the coming ones as well.

How does solar electricity panel work? This gadget utilizes PV cells the function of which is to gather all the energy that it can from the rays of the sun. After collecting, they convert such energy into electricity. Conversion is not yet perfected; in fact, its efficiency is only rated less than 40% and is lost in form of heat or light. However, all the converted energy is used as electrical power. This means that twenty percent of the available energy received is converted to electricity.

Solar Electricity Panels for the Home

Manufacture of solar electricity panel can be quite simple; they are built by mounting the cells in a plate and glass panel frame. The frame acts as a protector of the cells in case of extraordinary difficult element or weather. The glass acts as a conduit for the solar energy to be able to successfully touch the PV cells and at the same time likewise works as an efficient protector of the cells.

Some sun powered gadgets are known to be very flexible and portable, which means that can be folded up to be easily set up in other preferred areas. There are also devices that can rolled up for easy handling. Usually such types can be used by those family who are mobile as well as in the military. These solar electricity panel instruments are likewise utilized by those individuals who are always on the go and need power to charge cell phones and computers while on the field.

Suffice it to say that solar electricity panels are perfect alternative to the conventional or traditional sources of power that one needs to run the appliances and electrical gadgets that you and many other home owners have in your residences.
While you need to shell out a great amount of money just to be able to purchase and own a gadget, it is surely a one-time expense that you need to have. After that, there is no more worry about other expense as they are virtually non-existence. No monthly power bill, no maintenance or repair fees. You can even sell back your surplus power that you produce with your PV gadget to the local utility.

Finishing Barnwood

First thanks to everyone who is on these forums I have been reading and learning for about a year as I am new to woodworking and you have been a great help.

My question is on finishing barn wood for a kitchen table. I have searched and read a few of the posts by others who asked similar question but I want to clarify a few of my questions/concerns.

I am currently building a farmers/harvest table out of reclaimed barn wood. This is a bit different from a normal barn wood find in that these are cherry boards. I ended up planing these boards down to reveal the wood but still leave the character of the nail holes and some splits in the wood. Now as I am getting ready to finish this I would like fill in the nail holes and some of cracks with an epoxy but I am concerned on what it will do to the finish. I have test finished some of these boards with just a clear polyurethane or lacquer . It gives me the exact finish I am looking for. My concern is that the epoxy when applied could inhibit the finish.

Is one epoxy better than the others? How should I apply it to minimize the impact on the rest of the table.

Thanks

Discover your solar potential

How much solar energy potential does your location offer? Here are the ways to discover if a solar PV system can benefit you.

Look at the maps
Insolation (not to be mixed up with insulation) is short for ?incident solar radiation? and is measured at ground level with instruments known as pyranometers. A large network of pyranometers has been used to collect data from all over the world for decades. An advantage of these tools is that they factor in latitude, sun angle and climate. Check out the solar map.
solar power potential
The numbers on the maps are ?equivalent full-sun-hours? or ?peak sun-hours?, identical to kilowatt-hours per square meter per day. On the first map, the month of January in the Northern Hemisphere is shown. It?s not surprising that January is the worst insolation month of the year. The second map showcases insolation in June, which for most northern locations is the best month of the year.

The worst month includes essential information for off-grid PV systems, but doesn?t tell the whole story. Every kilowatt-hour matters when selling electricity to the utility company. The solar map depicts the average yearly insolation in the United States and these numbers are what you should focus your attention on. If you install a 1-kilowatt PV array on your roof and multiply the average full-sun-hours, you?ll learn how many kilowatt-hours of electricity you?ll generate per day.

You should also take the system derating factor into account, usually about 0.8. This compensates for dust and bird poop on the PV modules, and electrical losses in the system as it changes direct current (DC) electricity to alternating current (AC). To correct this, multiply your predicted kwh by 0.8. Next, multiply your corrected daily kwh output by 365. Then, compare this to your utility bill.

Online Solar Calculators
If the math seems perplexing, there are easier ways. There are a wide range of solar energy calculators online. An easy calculator to use is the National Renewable Energy Laboratory?s PV Watts Version One. This gives projected production figures for a variety of locations. PV Watts Version two has an interactive map. NREL also offers a tool called In My Backyard. This tool includes satellite mapping complete with cost and payback estimates. You can find a simple and quick solar calculator.

Remember, cost estimates can vary and are calculated using different criteria. Prices and incentives are known to change quickly. No two solar installations are alike, and every vender may offer a different price. For current pricing, it?s best to contact a PV installer that serves your area. It helps to contact two or three companies to gain understanding of what your investment may need to be. Most PV installers will offer a site evaluation, sometimes for free or they may refund the evaluation if you purchase a PV system.

Site Evaluations
Obtaining a professional site evaluation is a wise idea, even if it shows solar energy isn?t right for your location. Even the tiniest shadow falling across part of a PV array can significantly reduce total output, so it?s essential to install everything in the best location on your property. Shadow problems can change with the seasons as well. Site evaluations can identify any obstructions that could cause potential problems. They will let you know precisely which months of the year and times of day any shadows would occur, and how much energy would be lost. It?s possible to obtain a site evaluation online using satellite and other aerial imagery.

What's Next?
Say you?ve met with numerous local PV installers and most likely received quotes varying from $5 per watt to about $10 per watt depending on your location. The initial cost might still seem very high even though the system is designed to meet your annual electricity needs and reduce your utility bill to zero. That?s why there are plenty of incentives at the federal, state and local levels to help make solar PV a reality.

Clogs, Bogs, and Dogs

Clogs, Bogs, and Dogs

I have become accustomed to long lasting sandpaper like Norton 3x, and Freuds excellent ceramic blend sanding disks for my random orbit sander. I was running low on supplies, so I grabbed these Dewalt disks one day.
Almost instantly the paper loads and clogs while sanding oak and Titebond II glue. The sanding was short lived, and I clocked about 8-10 minutes of sanding before switching pads. At first I thought the dust collection was excellent, then I realized it was only because these disks weren’t actually producing any dust.
For comparison sake, Norton 3x or Freud ceramic blend last about 45 minutes per disk, and cost less than the Dewalts.

Finally the universal 5 hole / 8 hole pattern is a joke, and it doesn’t fuly align with my 8 hole sander. The Norton paper fits my sander, so the sander is a standard unit. Universal = one size fits none.

The velcro stuck well, but then again I was only using each disk for 10 min max.
Nothing else good to say about this product. Don’t waste your time.

Edward Davey speech to the Fair Energy Summit 2012

Edward Davey speech to the Fair Energy Summit 2012

Introduction

Energy bills are a major expense for British households, and a significant cost for British businesses too.

Ensuring that consumers get a good deal, with affordable bills from suppliers genuinely competing for their custom, is one of my top priorities.  And I look forward to the contribution that this summit will make to debate in this area.

I want to set the scene by setting out some of the facts, and putting to bed one or two myths which I think have been muddying the waters recently.

Main drivers of bills

The first point to remember is that wholesale energy costs make up around half of household energy bills – even more for industrial energy users.

Wholesale energy costs have been the major factor driving recent increases in consumer energy bills.

For example, UK wholesale gas prices, driven by the global markets, have doubled since 2007.

Network costs have increased  too, by around 20% since 2007, particularly the cost of transmitting and distributing electricity, as assets installed in the 1950s and 60s have been replaced, and additional network capacity added where needed.

Policy costs

Now let’s consider policy costs – that is, the impact on consumer bills of the obligations that Government places on energy companies for policy reasons.

Figures used by the industry itself show clearly that policy costs account for only a small portion of bills.  Indeed, in 2011, the combined impact of all Government’s energy and climate change policies was around £90 on an average household dual-fuel bill in 2011.  That’s around 7% of the total bill.

That’s dwarfed by the impact of wholesale prices, which are driven by global markets – but let me be clear:  I don’t want to add a penny to energy bills that isn’t in the public interest.   I am frankly fed up with commentators suggesting that the Government is deliberately increasing energy bills, when in fact we are doing everything we can to reduce them.

The bulk of the cost we add to bills is for supporting low-carbon technologies.  That’s essential for environmental reasons – and I make no apology for ensuring that we will meet our legally binding carbon budgets and renewable targets – but it’s also essential for diversifying our energy mix away from fossil fuels.

That’s how we can insulate ourselves from those high and volatile prices on wholesale markets.  In other words we’re adding a relatively small amount to bills now in exchange for reduced exposure to high prices in the medium and longer term.

As the independent Committee on Climate Change has confirmed, energy bills could be significantly higher in the coming decades if we do nothing to decarbonise the power sector.

Yes, our climate goals are extremely important.  But I also want people to understand that, over time, our low-carbon policies are intended to keep bills down, not to increase them.

We also place obligations on energy companies in order to improve energy efficiency.
Again, this contributes to that 7% on the average energy bill now, but over time, as the energy efficiency of our building stock is improved, it will help reduce bills, with customers saving money as their homes or businesses require less energy to heat and power.

As a result, taking all Government energy and climate change policies combined, when we look forward to 2020, we estimate that, on average, household energy bills will be lower, not higher, than they would have been without our policies.

Helping consumers

Of course, it’s all very well getting it right in the longer term – but I am concerned for people struggling to pay high energy bills now, especially those in low-income, vulnerable households.

We continue to encourage consumers to switch, and to promote collective switching.  And we’ll be legislating to ensure that the confusing multitude of tariffs is replaced by just four, with consumers on “dead” tariffs automatically switched to the best for them, given their preferences, and with much clearer information so that consumers find it easier to shop around.  Competition should work in all consumers’ interests.

But some need our help more directly.  So the Government is giving all pensioner householders under 79 a £200 Winter Fuel Payment this winter;  those 80 and over are getting £300.

And we have permanently increased the Cold Weather Payment, helping those most vulnerable to the cold, from £8.50 a week to £25 a week.

The Warm Home Discount scheme, worth over £1.1bn over 4 years, requires the big energy suppliers to reduce their lowest-income and most vulnerable customers’ bills.  We expect around 2 million households to benefit each year as a result.  As part of the scheme, this winter over 1 million of the poorest pensioners will automatically receive a discount on their electricity bill of £130 before the end of this month.

Other groups such as low income families and those on low incomes with long term illnesses and disabilities can also benefit through the scheme.

Yes, the energy companies will inevitably spread the cost of the Warm Home Discount scheme across other consumers.  That’s part of the 7% policy cost, and it’s a part that contributes directly to fairness.

And the new Energy Company Obligation, or ECO, running alongside the Green Deal, will ensure that low-income and vulnerable households are helped to heat their homes more affordably in the long term.  We estimate that energy suppliers will spend around £540 million per year on home thermal efficiency improvements for these groups, supporting around 230,000 households on low incomes or in low-income areas. each year.

The cost of ECO

Now energy companies have been suggesting that ECO will increase bills.  I believe there is no good basis for this claim.

We estimate the overall cost of ECO at an average of £1.3 billion per year – that’s the same as the current supplier obligations, CERT and CESP, which are now coming to an end.  So ECO should impose no new costs.

It’s true that there are some uncertainties about cost estimates. But I have to say that one of the key difficulties in reaching our own estimates has been the lack of transparency from the energy companies themselves.

They have not given us a clear picture of how much they were spending to comply with previous obligations. Nor do we know, for example, what their costs were for distributing over 300m light bulbs, often unsolicited.  And we don’t know what costs they’ve been passing through to consumers.

So this Government has made sure we have powers in future to understand exactly these points – how much it costs the companies and what they are passing on to consumer bills.

Once ECO is underway, therefore, we will be better able to monitor and review costs, understand if they do appear to be higher than anticipated, and consider what we can do to mitigate that if necessary.  I’m very happy to commit to keeping things under review in this way.

But as things stand, I’m confident that our estimate is a fair one. The arguments we’ve seen suggesting costs will be much higher seem to miss several important points, for example:

  • the clear appetite from local authorities to work in partnership to help deliver projects at scale;
  • the extra incentives the Government is putting in place, like the £125m cash-back scheme we’re launching in the new year to encourage take-up;
  • and the fact that a successful Green Deal market will allow companies to lever in extra finance, reducing the amount they have to provide in ECO subsidy themselves.

In fact, tomorrow we have the first auction of the new brokerage mechanism that the Government has set up to facilitate links between the companies and the Green Deal market. I will be looking to see if the ECO companies make full use of this opportunity to make transparent and cost-effective deals.

Conclusion

The Government is straining every sinew to ensure that consumers get a good deal and to ensure that in future, even if fossil fuel prices continue to rise, British consumers will enjoy secure, clean and affordable energy.

We are playing our part.  I believe it’s only fair for the energy companies to play theirs too.

SuperMax drum sander

Hello to all you LJ’s. I have been looking to buy a small drum sander and keep checking Craigs list with no luck. There is a fairly new one on the market by SuperMax and the story I got from my local tool supplier is two of the guys behind the company are from the original Preformax group. Has anyone here purchased one of these units? The sander is a 19-38 compared to Jets 16-32 and of course more money. Would like to get some feed back if anyone has one. Thanks Doug

Saw Blades

The secret to getting a great cut with a circular saw is to choose the right blade for the particular cut you need to make. For instance, for the best (and quickest) results, you shouldn't try to cut dimensional lumber with a plywood cutting blade. In this woodworking tip, learn about different types of circular saw blades and the task for which each blade is best suited.

Solar Power Your Electric Vehicle and Save Money

Affordable and viable electric cars are now hitting the market. Today there is the Nissan Leaf, Mini E Electric Mini Cooper, Tesla Roadster, Chevy Volt and more. By 2012 nearly every major manufacturer will be offering some version of a plug-in Electric Vehicle or hybrid including popular models such as the Ford Fusion, Toyota Prius and BMW. Instead of filling these cars up at the gas station, you recharge them overnight in your own garage. And if your home is solar-powered, your car is also solar powered!Nissan Leaf Chargepoint

The low fuel cost is really surprising with electric vehicles. As the chart below explains, a typical gas-powered car currently costs about 20 cents per mile in fuel cost. Drive an EV plugged into the power grid and your cost-per-mile is cut by more than half, to 5.7 cents. Plug that EV into your solar-powered home and your automotive fuel cost drops down to as little as 2 cents per mile! To compare that 2 cents per mile to today's gas prices, that's equivalent to about 40 cents per gallon of gasoline in a gas-powered car! This is not a typo. Driving an EV powered by solar panels costs about 90% less than a gas powered car.

For example, driving 200 miles per week to commute to and from work costs about $40 in gasoline, but just $4 with a solar powered electric car.  On a monthly basis, that's $160 in gas, but just $16 in electricity, only to go to work everyday. Factor in your other driving, and eliminate the need for the added cost of oil changes, and the savings get even larger.

Table: Comparison of Gasoline vs Electric Car Fuel Costs

Gasoline Car Electric Car Solar Electric Car
Fuel Cost $4.00/gallon 20 per kWh 7 per kWh
Car Mileage 20 mpg 3.5 mi per kWh 3.5 mi per kWh
Cost per Mile 20 per mile 5.7 per mile 2 per mile
 100 Mile Trip Comparison
Fuel Needed 5 gallons 28.6 kWh 28.6 kWh
Trip Cost $20.00 $5.72 $2.00

You can produce electricity for that 100 mile trip with a small 1 kW or 2kW solar panel system.  Prices start around $3,500, and you can apply a 30% federal tax credit and any state or local utility rebates for solar.  So you could charge your EV with solar panels for 25 years for as little as $2,400.  A solar panel setup like this would pay for itself in about a year of gas savings.

Using solar energy to power your home is a great idea. Using home solar energy to power your car is an even better idea! Solar Panels Online is leading the way to that brighter future and can assist you in planning a system for your home and your electric car needs.  We have solar panels, EV charging stations and everything you'll need to save a lot of money.

Makita RT0700C Roumer (Router/Trimmer) UPDATE REVIEW

Makita RT0700C Roumer (Router/Trimmer) UPDATE REVIEW

First of all ill like to point anyone who did not read my first opening the box review on this please have a read
( http://lumberjocks.com/reviews/3133 ).

So ive now been using this router (and im going to be calling it a router from now on for reason ill touch below),
now for 2 weeks but in those two weeks its had a good shake down and run time. Most of the two weeks use was in my full time job as a joiner making door, windows and stairs. So i thought ild put though some different types of work there and at home.

The first few jobs with this were simple round over?s on bifold doors and windows, the tool was so quite i hate to look to see if it was one when spinning at speed step 1 on the dial. I ran the tool at the low speed to see what bog down of the motor i got in some Australian hardwood (spotted Gum), what i heard was very little RPM drop and the finish cut was ok. The next past i turned the speed up to the full 30,000RPM which left and great finish on the round over.
The next task for this router was again at my full time job, this time routing out holes for bench top joiners in hardwood sills of bay windows in the factory. For this job i was using a 12mm straight bit, the final cut out depth was 19mm with a completed in 2 passes and ease. So far so good i thought.

The next job was back at home in my workshop, this time some inlay work on serving boards. As you can see in the picture of me part way though the work. Some the cut outs took me up to 15mins to cut out, in which time the tool got very hot around the mid section. To hot to hold for any amount of time this is the base was still fine to hold and i finished the job. The router was great for this type of work with the weight of the it just sat there until i moved it, i did fined it a little top heavy but worked great.

So for now on in for most little job up to mid sized work i will be going straight for this router. By far the best little router / trimmer i have used in my 10 years as a joiner.

Just my take?
