I like chamfers as much as I like grits. And making stop-chamfers with a little lamb's tongue detail at the end is like adding crispy pork belly and goat cheese to my grits.
As a result of my design fetish, I feel like someone in New Britain, Conn., was thinking of me when they invented the Stanley No. 65 chamfer shave. This fantasy is unlikely, however, because I wasn't even a fetus at the time.
In any case, I finally purchased a vintage No. 65 in 2010 and it quickly became one of my favorite specialty tools. If you don't cut stop-chamfers, don't bother buying one because that's pretty much all the sucker does. But if you need an accurately sized chamfer, there is no finer tool.
The beauty of the No. 65 is its two adjustable fences. These slide left and right and lock with thumbscrews. With the fences set, you scoop out your chamfer and the tool stops cutting when you reach your finished depth. Even a grits-loving Arkie can do it.
The fences and the sole of the shave are curved, so it takes a few minutes of practice to find the sweet spot with the tool. But once you find it, you won't want to leave it.
The original Stanley comes outfitted with a blade that is 1-1/2" wide, and the fences open to that full width. I've never tried a chamfer that wide. But then, I don't build many barns. With the two fences closed all the way you'll merely break the edge of a board ? you can't even tell you are making a chamfer.
The tool represents everything I love about older Stanley products. My version is from the company's Sweetheart era, which makes it circa 1919 to 1932. It is rugged. Simple. Easy to adjust. And the iron is firmly bedded in the shave.
If you can't find a vintage No. 65, you have some other options. You can add chamfer guides to your drawknife, which transforms the tool into a very large chamfer shave. Record also made a version of this tool for about 10 years. Search for the A65 when you are in England. And Kunz still makes a No. 65. You can buy it at TraditionalWoodworker.com for a reasonable price.
For years before I purchased a Stanley No. 65 I considered buying the Kunz, but I'd had such awful experiences with two different shaves from Kunz that I just couldn't do it. If anyone out there has the No. 65 Kunz shave and would like to chime in with their two cents, I'd appreciate it.

Other Handtool Resources to Explore
? Don't know much about Record planes? You should. The company produced many fine handtools, even as Stanley was giving up on the woodworking market. Get to know the RecordHandplanes.com site. There is lots of good information there.
? Another good source of Record-centric information is the book "Planecraft," which has been in print for what seems like forever. Despite the fact that it was produced by Record, there is some good (and not so good) information in it. Definitely worth your time.

I was a little bored in the shop today so I thought I’d try something I’ve been thinking about for a while – thin plywood. I used a scrap of walnut I had around, sized it so it was about twice as long as wide, re-sawed it (woodslicer) to well under 1/16”. Those blades are amazing. Then I vacuum bagged one piece to crossbands made from the second piece cut in half and when it came out, thinned both sides in the drum sander. Then I bagged the other side on and sanded again. What the photos show is a 4×8 (inch) sheet of three-ply walnut that is 1/16” thick. I didn’t realize until I came in and blew up the photos that one side is quite a bit thicker than the other. I could have run it through a couple more times and likely got 3/64”.
Now I have to figure out what it’s for. Any ideas?
In what must feel to some Florida homeowners like a last-minute reprieve, especially with the holiday season in full swing, the Florida Legislature has voted to approve $31 million in federal funds from ARRA to at least partially repay state residents who took out loans for solar power systems.
Florida's solar rebate program, like others we could name, made the promise of rebates without expecting enormous response, then found itself overextended. This newly approved funding will fall well short of the original promise made in 2006, which pledged $4 for every watt of solar power generated on systems between 2,000 and 5,000 watts.
The fund also applies to those who installed super-efficient heating and cooling systems. So, with the solar rebate program expired (June 30), and the state still accepting applications for the air conditioning portion through Nov. 30 ? the postmark deadline ? it seems that at least 4,000 AC upgrades between Aug. 30 and Sept. 14 of 2010 will meet state criteria.
The remaining unpaid 13,000 to 16,000 solar applications will have to be prorated based on whatever is left in the fund from the heating and cooling upgrades. The funding comes solely from the federal government; the Florida Legislature hasn?t voted a single additional dime.
Two thumbs up for Floridians who extended themselves to install clean, renewable solar energy. Four thumbs down for legislators who made a promise they knew they couldn?t keep.

Here we go again. This 6 inch capacity SO CALLED self-centering jig from TASK-USA or Telco tools is another example of lousy workmanship.
Another so called made in the USA centering jig that?s off by unacceptable tolerances.
If I wanted this kind of inaccuracy, I would use the drill press witout my glasses.
They claim their jig is within 10000 ?5000 tolerance, I guess they need to get back to school or learn to use a calculator. 10000 is = 0.0001 and 5000 = 0.0002.
My measurement shows 1/100 =0.01. sad part is, they didn’t even attempt to replace the unit claiming all their jigs are like this and are within tolerances.
Even harbor freight was more accurate than this. Well, I give up. the retailer at (eagleamerica.com) told me they tested few more of these and there was no point in sending me a replacement since the other ones they had in stock were ever more off then the one they sent me. funny thing is they even raised the price.
Save your cash and buy made in china. It?s all same junk!!
