Bird sculpture in wood

Bird sculpture in wood

This is another item that will be a Christmas present for my wife. (The other was the jewel box that I recently also posted.) I think I will call the sculpture item “stork in wood,” since it obviously has a bird-like shape. One shot shows a ruler next to it for size perspective. That sculpture itself is maple, with the painted base made of pine. Four coats of urethane were all that were required to handle the carving, with three coats of black enamel for the base. Both were in satin finish. The stain is a mix that I put together: mahogany and walnut. I call it walhogany.

I used eleven different power tools (the primary ones being a spindle sander and two different band saws), plus lots of hand sanding (down to 400 grit) to make the sculpture.
