How to make your band saw blades last longer

In using band saw blades, ensure that it is being properly used and maintained throughout the life of the product. This will help ensure and increase safety when using the band saw blades and will cause them to be more effective while cutting.

There are several things that can occur to cause your band saw blades to start to deteriorate including stripping teeth, band breakage, crooked cut, premature cutting of teeth, and rough cut.

All band saw blades need to be broken in. This is because when band saw blades are brand new they are too sharp. The best thing is to maintain the recommended band speed, reduce feed pressure to half the normal rate, and then run at these settings for the first 50 square inches of material cut. If the material is mild or low carbon steel, run the setting for the first 150 square inches of the material cut.

It is also important to know the SFPM for the various speed settings of your band saw, so that you can determine the proper speed for cutting wood or other materials. This will secure better effectiveness and a longer life span for your band saw blades. In order to accomplish this determine the proper RPM and measure the diameter of the drive wheel. To determine the RPM, check the operator?s manual or clock the revolutions per minute of the wheels with a tachometer or revolution counter. Then, measure the diameter of the drive wheel in inches and multiply by .262 to obtain the wheel circumference. The RPM?s multiplied by circumference equals the surface speed of the blade. Stop these problems from occurring prematurely by being aware that they can and do occur. Then take preventative action. Check your blades on a regular basis and ensure that it is running smoothly. It will last longer if you check them regularly.

Stripping teeth can be a major problem. This is when the teeth on the blade shred the material you are trying to cut. It can especially be a problem if there are too many teeth or too few teeth are working as part of the cut. This problem may be happening when the parts are not held securely, the feed rate is too high or speed too slow on the equipment, the chip brush is not working and thus the chips are overloading gullets, and the coolant concentration is not where it needs to be to effectively run the equipment.

Band Breakage can be another major problem. This occurs when the band is aging but also happens if the band is being excessively stressed. If the other equipment is getting older they may be placing more stress on the blades. It can also occur if the guides are worn, the guide arms are set too far apart, the diameter of wheels are too small, tension on the band is too high, and poor welding of the equipment in the first place. If the diameter of the wheels is too small, the solution would be to use thinner bands. This will decrease band breakage.

If the blade is producing a crooked cut, there may be some issues with how the blade is producing the cut. If your band saw blade is producing a crooked cut it may be due to a dull blade, the blade may have been improperly broken in, guide arms may be too far apart or out of alignment, the roller or carbide guides may be damaged, feed rate may be heavy, blade speed may be slow, or the vise clamp may be out of square.

Premature dulling of teeth can be another issue caused by lack of maintaining the band saw blade. Dulling of teeth can be a result of improper blade break in, inconsistent coolant concentration and flow, chip brush may need to be checked, feed rates and blade speed may need to be checked, or it may be caused by improper tooth pitch. Your band saw blade may start to produce a rough cut. This occurs when the band speed is too slow and the feed rate too high, the blade was improperly broken in, dull or damaged teeth, or the chip brush may need to be checked.

If you understand what signs to look for in order to keep your saw blades maintained, it will last longer, work better, and the work environment will be safer.
