SouthWest

SouthWest

My latest box in the Deco style is Spalted Western Maple. I angle cut the sides about 5 degrees, which shortens the corner splines as you go up…a nice effect I think. I Simply inset the top without routing the recess. This is easier of course, but also adds a more formal look with harder lines, the opposite of the sculpted/organic flow of many of my other boxes.
I cut the front detail on the bandsaw after adding the Wenge inlays.
The splines are purpleheart.
The handle is figured walnut.
The top stripes are walnut, maple, and purpleheart..
The hinges are 2’’ brass rod.
The divider is maple with a spalted maple center.
The bottom is covered with suede cloth.
The finish is Deft lacquer, semi-gloss.

Note: This type of lid, one that insets down into the body, and maintains squared corners, is fairly common. Its much easier to make than the routed recess style shown in my tutorial. This is a nice look and a great way to get started using pins for hinges. Also, no router is needed at all for this box if you use an alternate way to attach the handle. Just make sure your box is square when you glue it up!

For a comparison, take alook at WindSwept, it features a routed recessed lid.Click for details
