PG&E Raises Rates for the Second Time in 2 months

We learned from our partners at Acro Energy that Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) raised rates effective March 1, 2010.  This rate increase comes on the heels of a 3% rate increase in January. This increase affects Tiers 3, 4, and 5, raising the rates an average of 4.4% for the upper tiers.

PG&E uses a rate system with five tiers, each more expensive than the next. The lowest tier is 11.88 cents per kilowatt. The highest is 49.78 cents per kilowatt hour after the first 1,070 kWh.

Did if you know that if you spend $200 per month for electricity with a utility, then you will spend $81,979 over 25 years! Compare this to spending $5,000 to $25,000 for a solar panel system and having a $0 or very lower power bill. So, you can pay the utility for 25 years, with annual price increases, or you can pay a lot less for solar power. You'll also get some great solar tax credits and cash rebates, and you will increase the value of your home.
