Solar Energy International's Laurie Guevara-Stone, International Program Director, Talks Food Waste

Solar Energy International's Laurie Guevara-Stone, International Program Director, recently interviewed with Good Dirt Radio for a story on food waste. Good Dirt Radio is a nonprofit media outlet in Colorado featuring a solar-powered radio studio, whose mission is to educate the public about the connection between individual actions and a healthy future for our planet and encourage citizens to embrace positive solutions.

The story focuses on today's "spin-saturated, disposable, consumer America where almost all material goods made in the past 100 plus years have ended up in landfills, including a majority of food waste."

"The food we waste in this country is incredible. In the U.S. we waste almost 100 billion pounds of food each year. So that's, basically, over a quarter of all the food that is produced each year in the U.S. And this creates huge environmental impacts for a few different reasons," Laurie said. "One, methane comes out of food waste that rots in landfills and methane is over 20 times more powerful a greenhouse gas then carbon dioxide is. And then, of course, the energy and materials used to transport all that food to the landfills and then all the energy that has gone into producing and cooking all that food that doesn't get eaten."
