Carving on a Picture Frame

I am about to build a picture frame out of Purpleheart. I want to add a relief carving that will run across the top & down each side to about the half way mark. I am thinking that mitered corners will weaken due to the carving. Can someone suggest a different joint that would stand up to a carving like this? Maybe a half lap joint? I’m open to suggestions.
