This is a jewelry box for a granddaughter. She’s 6. She is a girlie girl and loves hearts.
She and I have a thing where I go on about the elephants and she rolls her eyes and insists that I stop talking about the Elephants which of course only spurs more about the Elephants.
I like to sign my work with hidden things where possible. It’s a conceit in which I indulge. So, yep, you guessed it, she’s got an Elephant in her box.
I festooned the inside of the box with hearts. It’s an orgasm of hearts.
The through cut drawer pulls are intended to allow her to draw the drawers out completely while having a firm one handed grasp on the drawer.
I put only two hearts on the outside to let her have a more demure public exposure, but I made ‘em all cute and bubbly. The wood is Siberian Elm harvested on my property. The finish is Enduro Pre-Cat 181 Satin over BLO, brushed on. The drawers are fitted and stamped with a number on the back so they can always go back where they should.
It is my hope that when I’m long gone, and she’s an adult, she’ll open drawer #7, think of me, and get a little more than misty.
