My wife wanted a new sofa style table for our entry way. It had to be narrow so visitors could walk by as our entry way isn’t very wide. It’s actually part of the living room. We decided on 16 inches deep by five feet wide.
In the not too distant past I made a dining room table for my daughter that was made out of old kitchen table legs. So I decided to make a similar table for this project.
Like the dining room table, this was to be of country style & to have turned legs. I had another set of old kitchen table legs so I got to work. This set of legs was from a table that had “splayed” legs. Meaning the legs angled out from the corners. At first I was going to trim off the sides of the angled portion of the legs & glue wood back on to get the square shape back… But while making the oak apron, I was playing around with the placement of the legs & decided it would look just fine if I removed the anchor bolts, plugged the holes, trimmed the top of the legs square & inserted the anchor bolts into the opposite corners. Corner brackets & the apron were made of oak. And the apron was drilled to hold the top on with pocket hole screws. After assembly I used gloss remover on the legs & painted the legs with gloss black Rustoleum water based paint.
For the top I went to the hardware store & picked out some nice straight 2”x6”s &, after binding them together for a couple of weeks to acclimate them to the shop, milled them to 1” thick by 5-5/16” wide. Next I trimmed the ends off to the overall length & chamfered all of the corners with my router. The boards were then biscuit joined by the edges. The finished top was installed after it was stained with water based maple stain & given a water base sealer.
The wife was happy for another 10 minutes or so.
